New f class rifle vs second hand

Post by cirus »

Hey- I'm looking into buying a F class rifle for shooting anywhere between 200yards-1000yards and wanting some suggestions on what to buy. Ive heard some suggestions of buying a second hand rifle like a omark for $200-$400, getting a new barrel on it and conversion kit. I have also been told by the time you do all that costs end up being similar so your better off buying a new rifle. I have a budget of around $2500-$3000max so any suggestion on where to put my money before i dive in would be appreciated thanks.

Best suggestion is to go to the club and see whats around you can often find some very good kit 2nd hand.

An Omark can be rebarrelled and fitted up reasonably cheaply and is a good starting point for anyone entering the sport. A Barnard might be in the price range but I think an RPA might be a bit more.

Try the members at your club and see whats around before you jump in.

For that sort of money, you could go for a sleeved remington that has been trued etc with a new barrel, buy one of the MBR copy stocks, have the action bedded and a decent trigger. Good way to go about it on a budget.

That is of course if you already have a suitable scope.

There's a couple of nice rifles for sale at the moment here on the forum. If you already have a scope then the 6.5x284 might be the go. Just another avenue to look at.

One of my fellow club members picked up a mastin barnard fullbore rilfe with f-class accessories for about $2k, there is some great gear around if you look. needless to say I was very jealous, love the simplicity of the barnard and their trigger is fantastic.

Thanks for the replies. That rifle looks nice, but i am still not 100% at what I'm looking at as this will be my first rifle/gun. So far all i have is a gun safe :). From what i can work out i guess buying a new factory rifle isn't a very good idea, so buying a second hand custom rifle is the best thing to do for my price range?. As for buying from the club, I've been to a few shoots and didn't hear about any rifles for sale but got alot of suggestions of going to the armory/club in Perth as they have alot of omarks ranging from $200-$400.

Edit: If i was so purchase a rifle from another state can anyone give me a bit of a idea on what kind of costs/who you would get it sent through. My dad phoned the cop shop today and they said they can hang onto any rifles you buy there until our licenses go through. Have to pick a rifle and get the serial number of it before they will even send the papers off :S. It seems every time we phone and get someone different they all have something different to tell you/add.....

I'll convert it to cars then for you.

The Omark is a Fiat 650 2-stroke with a broken exhaust.

and the RPA Quadlight is like an 2008 AMG Merc- but someone is offering you the Merc with race setup
and
A ready to go spare Holden Police pursuit special to use till you can drive properly- all for the cost of a vanilla S pac dunny dore

But I wouldn't get it with the weaver 36X scope- I'd see what Vortex AU could offer you in a high end variable so it gives you more versatility and options in ranges of competitions you can try.

Dealing with WA's firearms lic division direct might be a better idea than ringing the local coppers- get all the relavent legislation clauses and quotes as well so you know exactly your rights and responsibilities. Being that it can be classed as a specialist competition rifle could be an advantage as it will be seen as less of a public threat.

Hey Cirus,
I have a question for you!

Do you like sanding and finishing stocks?

The reason i ask is i could put a rifle togther for you for approx $3100 all new but with a semi finished laminate stock that would need to be sanded and finished in a clear or sprayed with two pack or similar.

It would most likely be a custom Viper action with stainless match barrel pillar bedded onto a laminate stock with rifle basic trigger and scope rings. Calibre can be almost anything you want.

Just a thought.
cheers,
Shane

Sooo...if the omark is a Fiat 650 2-stroke with a broken exhaust and the RPA Quadlight is like an 2008 AMG Merc, what is a custom Viper action like? :P
