Customising a Rem BDL stock
All of my rifles have stocks that are too small for my hands - if I grip the pistol grip properly the trigger blade sits against the second pad (below the first joint) on my trigger finger. A few years ago I read an article by Bill Hambly Clark Jnr in G&G magazine which talked about modifying a factory stock to better fit, with some of the example photos speaking directly to this issue. It prompted me to look out for a beater stock for my Rem 700 .22-250 to have a go. I picked one up from Crackers a year or so ago and the current COVID situation means I have a bit of time to actually make a start.
A key photo from the article:
Progress so far - still pretty rough, and I need to glue some extra length on the butt. Might need to shave the underside of the butt at a flatter angle too:
Comparison against the factory stock:
I’m using the stock on the .243 as a bit of a guide, but need to increase the grip length even further:

Looking promising. Some rifle stock pistol grips seem like they were made for the tiniest of hands, that's for sure.
Cheers

A shitty cold windy day with passing showers so mite work in the shed.
Next step is to take approx 1cm off the bottom at the butt and taper back to the pistol grip

Re: Customising a Rem BDL stock
Butt reshaping is about done. Used bog tinted with colouring from a two pack epoxy kit to fill the hollows left where the shoulder of the old butt joined up to the new comb I glued on the top. Just need to extend the pistol grip by 1cm or so.
This is why I am mucking around with it - grip length on my factory Sako A1 stock (all my factory stocks are similar):

Re: Customising a Rem BDL stock
A still and overcast morning so couldn’t help but give it a little try out - not bedded, not zeroed, just threw the barrelled action into the stock, tightened up the action bolts, and gave it a whirl:
With the factory stock I usually hold the forend when shooting over a bipod or bags as the muzzle tends to jump a little. I shot this group over a bag without holding the forend; it seems to recoil straight back at the shot with no discernible muzzle jump - another objective achieved!
