Having fluted a number of barrels over the years, i can say that if you're careful, not overheating the barrel while in the cutting process, i have yet to see a barrel lose its shit once reinstalled and shot with the load it was good with beforehand. Barrels that were fluted before being shot, well that is purely speculative as there is no baseline.
I've heard the stories of the disasters of barrels being fluted. Which brings me to this. There are literally thousands of stories out there about what can, would or might happen if you flute a barrel. But what of carbon wrapped barrels? Seems the silence is deafening on these. A match barrel blank is taken and run between centres in a lathe where the centre profile is shaved down to a pencil thin tube with two blobs at either end. Then carbon fibre and resin are layed on the pencil section where the final product is usually finished to a varmint profile. The amount of material removed from the blank is huge. So before one questions the amount of material that is removed on a fluted barrel, consider removing material to leave a parallel tube at around 14mm diameter and what affect that may have on barrel internal dimensions.
