Do you get “hard rubbish collections” out that way? If so, keep any eye out for the inevitable mountain of BBQ’s as you might find one with a temp gauge. Hopefully it’ll cover the temperature range you’re aiming at with the smoker.

Nope, just the junk pile at the tip, which it is verboten to touch, unless you are the Tip Lacky, who is also the fella who has orders to run the dozer over it and stuff anything that might be of use there, and push it into a big pile. Its a waste, but the council is worried about its safety obligations

You don't have to worry too much about leaking. A lot of smoking is low and slow so you don't need a lot of heat 70-180c.
