Advice on bedding a rifle
I'm looking for some advice on bedding a rifle.
I have two stocks for the rifle one synthetic (OEM) and a Boyds. The idea is to bed the OEM stock first in case I stuff it up, I'll have the Boyd's as a backup.\
Looking at the various Youtube videos I'm still not convinced it's the right way to go for a first timer with no first-hand backup.
Who here has done a bedding job and how tricky was it for your first attempt?

Re: Advice on bedding a rifle
I have only done the one and had the same trepidation as you.
In the end, it was fiddly getting the modelling clay I used as barriers and moulds in place but it wasn't too tricky.
As long as the release agent works, then if you've stuffed it up, then a dremel will remove the stuff up so you can start again.
The bottom line is you make a void that will be filled with the bedding material, add some modelling clay or similar as dams to stop the material going into places it shouldn't, put some release agent on the bits that will touch the bedding and fill it up with the material, bolt in the action and barrel, make sure it is straight and aligned then wait for it to dry.
What could possibly go wrong?

Masking tape and neutral kiwi nugget. The two most important things for a quality bedding job.

I understand labour rates aren't cheap and don't mind paying a fair price but I thought that a little too much.

Trevor the quote I had was from a LGS out Frankston way.
I could've bought a Howa for that price...or perhaps I underestimated the cost of smithing these days.

Nah mate, that is bloody excessive for a bedding job, its not rocket science I would have thought 150 or so would be a good price.

Re: Advice on bedding a rifle
There’s about an hour and a half labour, pillars if needed and bedding compound. If that adds up to $150 your going to go broke.Camel wrote:Nah mate, that is bloody excessive for a bedding job, its not rocket science I would have thought 150 or so would be a good price.

Raven that shop is well known for unfortunate pricing policy.
Call procal. If you like the price I can drop yours off when I pick mine up

Raven text him and make sure you are happy with the price first. I’m waiting on a call to tell me when mine is ready so as long as you are happy with the price you can drop it over as soon as you likeThe Raven wrote:Sounds like a plan Trevor. PM me the details and I'll organise to get it to you.
