Been waiting for glue to dry, final fitting of upper layer with holes. Now figuring out a lid for it

Nah, you were pretty close with the exotic cartridge holder, it is a cartridge holder but not exotic cartridge, just plain old 6BR.

Happy with it so far, got to improve my joints, might get flash and try some dovetailing next time, got the router bits, just not sure on how to do it.

6BR is exotic...never seen it on the shelf at a LGS.

Heh, I have a stack of router bits. From memory I've used two, so consider me a router expert (only because I still have 10 fingers)

Don't worry about the dove tail joints just be like the rest of us and cut some pigeon tail joints

Now I never thought of that, thanks Dave, pigeon tail joints must be a bit rough, will match up with my metal work skills, I can pigeon shit weld with the best of them.

Did some more on it today after spending the morning out picking up a workshop gantry,



Sanding, sanding, another coat of spray clear finish, thats 4 so far, then some more on the lid, gluing in small diamond shaped wooden tiles and making and fitting some edging. While sitting in the shed watching the paint and glue dry I decided to take the Ravens advice and started making a loading block for large (308) sized case heads. My old simplex blocks only have 40 holes for both small and large case head sizes, so figured I would make some with 50 holes, I will start the small head size (222) tomorrow, and might even do one for magnum cases.

No photos yet, will get some tomorrow.

Hi Camel,
A tip for preparation between coats on your box or anything else you put clear on. Use non soap impregnated steel wool instead of fine sandpaper and you will get a better finish. Rub up and down with the grain not across or in circles. This tip was given to me by an old French polisher here in cairns many years ago.

Yeah, thanks Trev, I am planning on using fine steel wool in between the next two coats now I have the grain nicely filled, just a matter of a little bit more elbow grease. Yeah, its not a very good idea to rub across the grain, though in this timber because of the swirls its a little difficult to follow the grain flow.

More sanding and another coat of clear on the box this am, think that will be the last.







Then got stuck into the lid which was clamped up overnight

Will give it its first coat this arvo. Also drilled and sanded the loading block, will spray that one as well

A few minutes and a quick spray later, really brings out the grain

Update time, finished my two loading trays, large is red gum with red gum edging



Small one is redgum with red cedar edging



Still going on the cartridge box, had to do a slight modification by adding another layer each side so my hinge screws wouldn’t go right through the sides
