Guys,
Silly question (potentially) time. With a build in the pipeline, I always struggle with barrel profiles. The Lilja site is fantastic to review numerous contours. In the past I've run #6 straight tapers on a 458, great for soaking recoil. Lots of variations on that theme.
However, a thought came to me. For small bores, why does no contour seem to exist where following the parallel, then radiused swoop, the barrel simply continues parallel? A 28" barrel could thus be fitted, tested, then knocked back and it's not getting thicker as it's shortened.
A variation would be regular parallel for a Rem700 based on a #1 contour, sporter swoop and taper to 0.600 a few inches ahead of the chamber parallel... then straight at 0.600" for its fill length. With a 20cal hole through it.
Cheers...

Hi Con
While the manufacturers have their standard profiles, my experience is you can ask them for a specific profile and they will manufacture to that. Probably just pay to speak with your supplier.

Con,
You can order a barrel in any taper you like, if its not listed the worse case scenario is you have to pay more. I can only guess it has to do with small diameter barrels will have more whips to them, with a taper it would whip less. It's only my guess.

Re: Barrel contours...
That's what I'm wondering. Can't remember the reason, but I think the stepped military barrels had a definite purpose behind them.
A mate has just put such a barrel together in 25/06, taper to the forend tip then a straight parallel for the remainder to a full 28" length. only 100-150fps behind a 257Weatherby, and it handles superb!
Cheers...

G'Day all,
its not really the profile that matters but the bore finish. however in my limited experience, the larger the barrel OD the closer and wider the accuracy nodes.
