6mm ????????

Post by Camel »

Been over in Griffith talking to gunsmith mate who has my Omark action, been toing and froing about what to make on it for a while now, he has reamers for 6BR, 6 Dasher and 6 Creedmoor. I dont have any interest in the last one, but the two have sorta got me interested.

Use will be for an odd trip out bush busting crows and rabbits if I can find some, an occasional fox spotlight session, and a bit of fun attempting to shoot some LRBR at Narromine. I don't want to be too serious about the BR game, mainly because I can't afford that type of seriousness. Been offered a Rem Varmint profile 6mm barrel that is chambered for 6BR at the moment, had very few shots through it and is a proven good shooter at a reasonable price.

Never owned a 6mm rifle, except for one M55 Tikka with a rusty barrel that I on sold without even putting together.

What to do ?? :?

Dies and brass will be easier to find for it, which is a consideration. :D

Yeah, that might be the case with speed, but not by that much, :?

Dasher if you want to shoot it to 1000 and junk the rem barrel if it isn’t fast enough twist for the heavy target pills

Mark, everyone should own a 6 BR. Its sort of the rite of passage in the target world like the 222 is in the varmint world. Shoots lights out, barrels last a long time and in all but the absolute most horrid conditions, are competitive.
In long range BR competition, the Dasher or straight 6BR have won everything. The 6 Creedmoor and 6x47 haven't. And won't. Great at steel plate, but so are 223s and 308s as was seen at last weeks PRS match up here.

Lapua 6 BR brass, 205Ms, 30.5 grains Re 15, 107 SMKs seated for 20 thou jump in a 120 thou freebore chamber and your good to go. Works in every barrel i ever had and with the inclusion of 103 Copperheads, was exactly what i used to win at Narromine in 2013. The last time i shot a 6 BR.
The biggest decision will be to turn necks or not, but i guess no turn for the KISS principle. New blue box cases need a 0.270" neck reamer for a no turn chamber. Old cardboard boxed cases need a 0.272" neck. If you find old cardboard box cases, sell them to me, not that macca pirate

As a last note, bush back that Omark bolt head/firing pin to 60 thou. Most old girls are all worn badly to the point where loads a long way from approaching the high end, where you need to be, will blank primers. You will not get anywhere near the pressure or speed to make the 6 BR work even in a pristine Omark action. Trust me on this, you must bush back that firing pin. Under no circumstance use the recipe above in an 80 thou firing pin action. It will blank primers. This is what holds back a lot of 6 BRs and the like with small rifle primers.

Why, won't the BR make the distance ?? Its not a Remington barrel, that was reference to the profile, its a Maddco with only around 100 shots through it.

Tony thanks for that advice, I was sorta hoping that you or one of the other fellas would jump in with a post like that, Darren has had a fair bit to do with Omark actions and used to shoot them in F class before he went to Barnard, he has still got some bits and pieces. I don't know much about his reamer specs, but they are shiny and look nice, sound a bit like Trevort there,  I will be able to get the load data with the barrel, just no brass and dies, I will have to begin to look around for that stuff.

Of course rem varmint profile barrel means a Maddco. How silly of me not to know that

Hey Camel I would say of the reamer choices you have go the straight BR.

As Tony said don’t even start without bushing the firing pin, been there done that and had to bush mine.

The other thing to consider with the Omark is their extraction. I have found on mine when pushing things along with the straight 6BR they can tend to get a bit sticky on extraction if you don’t manage your brass each firing. When I went to the 6BRA it became unusable it you want to shoot it quickly which I think could be the situation if you went with the Dasher.

You could sell the omark and buy young Keith’s howa barrelled action and seek the barrel and muzzle break and have a very cheap action. Or are you just trying to prove that you can make a silk purse from a sows ear

Nothing wrong with the Omark Trev as far as accuracy. When I ran mine as a 30cal never had any issues with extraction and regularly agging in the 6” area. Just when you push them hard pressure wise extraction can become bit of an issue.
