Trev i had one years ago in a Krico 600 HB. Foolishly sold it. Then years later i did one for BR as i did with 222 then 222 Rem Mag before it. Recently i acquired a few 223 Howa/Weatherby actions through a mate who owns three gun stores, two in Qld and O'Reilly's in Vic.
Then another mate and i did a horse trade and i ended up with dies and 300 new RWS cases which in themselves are worth a lot of cash and are scarce. So the itch itched some more. Then i decided to see how accurate a build could be done using components not necessarily first pick. Howa action, TSE barrel and Choate stock. So far it looks good.

Well it has certainly turned out to be a half decent back scratcher. :D

Yes it definitely works

I am a bit surprised at the velocity though I thought you would be getting a bit more

I shot with a bloke the other evening who was using 40’s in a 223 AI at 4000 fps he was using an old Sako A1 action I forget what load he was using but I will ask him and report back here

I got to 4440fps with the 40 gun nbt and still had room for more powder room n the 22x 47lap. Somehow I don’t think he picked this cartridge to win a speed competition

Trevor I am surprised at the velocity because the op is using a case 3mm longer and in a stronger action.

And yes your 22x47L is faster, the same as a 220 Swift, 22Creedmore ,22 Cheetah or possibly a 22 falcon

Now just who would have thunk that a case with a larger capacity could be run at higher speeds.

Hi guys. Stock Win 223 case capacity of H2O is 30.1 grains. The AI version holds 32.2 grains of H2O.
The 5.6x60 case unfired holds 34.4 grains of H2O and another half grain once fired.
From those numbers the 5.6x50 should exceed the 223 AI case by an equal amount as it does over the standard 223 case. Why i didn't get a faster speed is more about component choice and restrictions due to primer blanking from a worn firing pin hole of a well used action. Why i chose BM2 is simply because of accuracy. If i wanted speed, CFE223 or 10X would be my first choice. But again useless until the firing pin issue is resolved.
Data shows where the 223 AI finishes at around 29 grains for 100% load density, those are recommended minimum in the 5.6x50.

No Glenn. I made it for 55s but let’s not derail this thread

Another session at the range this morning had me testing seating depth and primers to illiminate the popped shots i am continually seeing with the load testing. I opted to not use the RWS 4033 primer because their Chernobyl like brissance is to be saved for my long range rifles.
Seating depth of more jump and jam shows the contrast but did nothing to solve the separation of shots. Federal 205 Ms are very ordinary but the Rem 7 1/2s are a drastic improvement.
Being a hotter primer obviously settled the ignition issues like the 4033s did but in a far cheaper and more readily available way.
The final load looks to be 30 grains of BM2, Rem 7 1/2 and the 40 BT jumped around 10 thou.
At a later stage i will look to test CFE223 to try and pick up a couple of hundred fps, but for now this load around 3900 fps will get some use culling crows next weekend.
