Nice work and that’s a monster of a forge, I’ve made damascus with a power as part of a course with a bloke called Keith Fludder and he does some amazing work but I’ve also done some by hand not as elaborate mind you but the best way for a higher layer count is to start out with five layer billets and make a few of them once they have been forged down then forge another five of those five layer billets together. I have a billet that’s five layer that’ll be cut in half and I’ll be adding another 1/4 in think piece of 15n20 between them to make San Mai billet. Hopefully it’ll work out.

I would not say the best way to get a large layer count was by using multiple 5 layer pieces, i got to 320 in 4 welds and 200 in 3 welds if i was using 5 layers after 6 welds i would only be at 25(1 for each 5 layer and then 1 to put them together).
Had you have said the best way to get a large piece of material was with lots of smaller ones then i would have agreed, i would rather do 10-12 layers in shorter lengths and then weld them together for a larger piece than start with 20 longer layers.
I thought san mai was only 3 layers?
Was your course with Keirh at everleigh?

The longer of these 2 turned into this, pattern will change as i grind the taper in, at the moment it is just milled flat for a look
