Importance of rifle build components

Post by Camel »

Having a discussion with Darren the gunsmith in Griffith yesterday, brought up the subject on which are the most important components of an accurate rifle build, and where each component rates on a scale, first listed being the most important, and last being the least important. So where, in your opinion, would you rate the following components
We included the basic components required to get the rifle shooting accurately.

We both had a couple of differing opinions on some things, but they were only small differences.

Barrel came out on 10
Bedding 9
Gunsmith abilities 8
Shooter 7
Ammo components 6
Mounts 5
Scope 4
Ammo makers ability 3
Trigger 2
Action 1

The middle few were where we differed a bit, but it was strange we both had pretty much the same top two and last two.

What do you fellas reckon ? Have a discussion, and if you want you can also include your reasoning.

:D

Hmmm barrel and action should be one and two with the gunsmiths ability to fit them together with the bore perfectly square to the bolt face third and then bedding job and trigger

If it's a target rifle reamer before barrel and action according to some knowledgable blokes I listen too.
To be bluntly honest all components are equally important a broken useless scope negates every other component. As does a door latch trigger. Poor bedding etc.
To be truly accurate all components must be equal in importance or the system doesn't work and therefor will not be accurate.
That's my take.

Couldn't argue with any of that. Maybe the trigger higher up list. Barrel and Bedding defiantly the most important and from my experience most actions will be accurate with a good beeding job and custom Barrel

Pretty Walnut stock and a hand rubbed oil finish.(does it fit you and is it suitable for the intended use)

Calibre cartridge (no good using a 6mm Lee Navy instead of a 6mmBR at 500m fly or a 44 mag at short range benchrest)

Gun plumber (Reamer and reamer holder action true to bore)

Barrel (silk purse/sows ear)

Action/Trigger (lock time and weight of pull creep)

Bedding pillars ?

Mounts

Scope (Are you using a benchrest nightforce 8-32 on your rimfire for pinging rabbits)

Ammo or the ability to assemble good reloads (if the above is top knotch even el cheapo wenshittington ammo can shoot well.

For most shooting disciplines the stock makes a big difference also, rate it up there in the top 4 IMO.

Barrel #1
Bedding/fit/compatability #2
Stock #3
Smith #4
Trigger #5
Action #6

No combination of the above will shoot if the ammo or the shooter is not capable, so dont bother listing that as a number - they must be good for the above numbers to works

Barrel/Reamer/Bedding/Smith #1
Stock/Action #2
Trigger #3

Nut behind the butt #4

Ammo/Sights/Wind Gods #5

And #2 or #3 are interchangeable.

Exactly what Trevor said!

How can you put the action last?

Well, did see a Mauser 98 shoot a possible today.

One could say "the nut behind the butt", is more important.

It has the least input into the bullet reaching its intended target, all it does is provide an endstop to the chamber.

Actions shouldn’t be RAF productions. Read about “trueing an action “

What is the bullet going to do in flight if it doesn’t enter the barrel straight on?

So your saying all actions are created equal?
Yeah right!

I agree with Trevor again!

When I did my coaching course for the youth training scheme one thing was made perfectly clear.

Forget about the rifle. If you’re serious about your shooting it will be more capable than you.

Trigger control is everything. The ability to move one finger without upsetting the position of the rifle will increase scores/accuracy.

Mind you, the bloke running the course has successfully coached quite a few olympians.
