Great to see some are keen on the concept of "back to the future" ... nice one HiWall and mevo.

P14 action, heavy barrelled match grade barrel in a 303/22Improved (use the full length case) as a lie down varminter. I've got a Marsden built P14 that would look awesome as a "retro" varminter.

Or ... singleshot 6mm/06 on an M17 ... again looking for the "retro" varminter look.

Cheers...

Mate,

Thats a how longs a piece of string question. Lets assume that you are talking varmiting as thats the forum name. As such weight is of no consequence cos its a not a walk around gun. Possible calibres ;

6mm Cactus (257WBY necked down to 6mm)
25 Banshee (8x68 necked down to 25)
Ferguson .257 Hot Tamale (7mm STW necked down to 25 cal)

So really just pick the muzzle velocity and bullet weight then select the case to put under it ..

Why because you can ...

cheers

338 Snipe Tac....

Look it up!

300 Sierra Matchking at 3400fps sound any good? Will take from little varmints to big varmints!

I'll still stick with a 20BR.. using a XR100 Remington as a base!

The 25 Hot Tamale stats are ;

A muzzle velocity of 4,060 fps with a 100-grain, all-copper J-36 bullet (manufactured by Lost River Ballistic Technologies Inc.) and a ballistic coefficient of .532:

+ 1.89 inches at 100 yards

+ 3.15 inches at 200 yards

+ 1.78 inches at 300 yards

Dead-on at 350 yards

– 2.58 inches at 400 yards

– 10.27 inches at 500 yards.

Velocity at 500 yards is still in excess of 3,000 fps.

Energy in foot-pounds generated at the muzzle is 3,660, and at 500 yards, it still maintains 2,057 foot-pounds of energy which is more than adequate for deer-sized game.

Now thats a flat shooting varmit rifle in my book.

How long do you think the barrel in that would last?
What I wont is something just for busting bunny's fox's etc at long range.

x wssm,
If you were able to build ANY wildcat cartridge
Image
The .257 family tree (L to R): .250 Savage; .257 Roberts; Rem. .25.06; .257 Weatherby Magnum; and the .257x7mm STW Ferguson Hot Tamale.

http://www.2joutfitters.com/STWrifle.htm

As far as barrel life goes I have a 6mm Cactus (257WBY necked down to 6mm) I get about 600-700 rounds from a barrel at BR standard accuracy based on 105 bergers over 68 grns of AR2214 (I still have a fair bit if anyone needs any) .. for hunting/varmiting I would say 1500 would be about it. Remember barrels are just another consumable to BR shooters and if performance is what you want then you have to loose somewhere in the process.

I agree that the 257 STW is a huge overore but you got to admit its a hell of a bit of kit.

What do you really want to to build ? Give us some more boundaries ie custom action action full race rig or varmiter in an unusual calibre? How far and what do you actually shoot (ie rabbits at 350m) ? Do you handload ? Are you happy to fiddle with cases ie neck don, neck turn etc to make them ?

cheers

What I really want to do is build something a bit different for varmint shooting
Do I hand load Yes
Am I happy to fiddle . Thats the whole point of the project, I will be doing the lot myself from grinding the chamber ream to loading the bullets
