They are called "tactical toes" in firearm circles. Look for them in pics on second hand gun websites.
You can generally judge the quality of the rifle by the quality of the "tactical toes" (or parts thereof).

That will work.
Drill for a couple of pins and plenty of epoxy
I haved used 22 cases for rivets, could use 22mag if need to be longer and of course if the knife has a magnum in it it will be more deadlier.
