CFE BLK

Post by Tony Z »

In case anyone was wondering about this powder i have shot it in two 7.62x39s, one a Howa 1500 the other a Howa Mini where both have been fiffed with 24 inch long 0.308" SS tubes. The results with 30 grains of CFE BLK with either the 110 Vmax or 125 SSTs is near on identical in both rifles at 200 yards.

Hi Barry. BLK has been available for a while now. Some months in fact. I cannot say enough about this powder. Clean, meters great and in my two 7.62x39s it gives the best accuracy and fastest velocities by a long way (125s @ 2600fps) showing no pressures at all.

Jack yes both barrels are ex 0.308" match barrels. One is a 17 twist ex Hunterclass barrel in the Howa mini, the other is a 14 twist barrel that was originally a 30JAT in your Diamondback.

Barry if your looking at the 7.62x39 my results are similar to the above in the little CZ 527 carbine 18 1/2"barrel I jumped about 140 fps to to 2,540 fps with no signs of pressure, the powder runs lovely through a thrower. I reckon if the new 527 with the 22"barrel ever lands here you will be looking at close on 300 savage velocity

For some time i had wanted to try BLK in my 22 Hornet. Just before new years i ran three shot groups with 40 Vmax starting at 12.0 gr through to 13.5 gr in 0.3 grain increments. The rifle is my Ruger in its Boyds Pro Varmint stock.
What i noticed first up was the POI didn't shift around like it does with other powders i have tried. No three shot group was bigger than three quarter MOA. Only change was the 12.0, 12.3 grain loads that were a little low of the aiming mark. The rest hit the round black dot. The tiddiest group was at 12.9 grains. So yesterday i tried that load for five shots at a 100 yards. Bit of left to right breeze so i aimed left side of the dot. The 3-9 Leupold was adjusted up from the previous session a couple of clicks to get me about a 125 yard zero.
If you go to the Hodgdon reloading tool you will see BLK listed. What is of note is the pressure. It is so low compared to the other powders for similar velocity it is a no brainer that this is the powder for the Hornet. You may not get the velocity of LilGun, but that is only because you can't get it into the case. 12.9 grains is a light compressed load. 13.5 grains is a very compressed load in the S&B cases. This powder has transformed my Hornet. 2205 is good as is 296, but BLK does not throw a shot and POI is predictable.

Can't wait to try it in the 19 badger, nobody seems to have a quickload that can work with the powder. 15.8 gr of RL-7 give around 3,550 fps with a 32 gr bullet but this CFE BLK runs through the measure like water, beautiful powder

Looking good, specially out of a Rugger.

Tony, have you tried any of this stuff in the 222 and its wildcats, mainly 20/222. Might be worth my while after I run through my last 5 tins of 2207. :D
