260 REM

Post by MISSED »

Having a bit of a look about this arvo and saw the advertised velocity of the 260 Rem.

Bloody anemic I mean I know they work but surely you could expect 3000FPS with a 123gr pill.

If you were going to load for one would not you be better of forming from 308 Palma brass and running at a bit more pressure to utilize the case capacity ? Or going 6.5 SLR or 260 AI.

6.5 Saum?

I do like the idea of the SLR cases for sure.

Other option is a double based powder like rl17 that provides really good velocity.

What pressure are they advertising, maybe run it up to what other cartridges are run at and it will be a different story. Bit like 222 and 223 pressures, in modern rifles athey can be run at better pressure than years ago. :D

You will be able to get it but the question will be the pressure. I got 140's over 2900 in a 6.5 Creedmoor but the primer pockets didnt like it. Given the 260 has more volume you should get there. My Lapua Creedmoor brass has arrived so i will try the same load with small primers and see if it makes a difference.

260 Rem - 45.0 gn of Re17 should get around 3100 fps with the 123gn SST. Can't say what case life would be like as it's at max pressure on Quickload.

Well I have what I think is a great 6.5 so will not be going anywhere I was more just commenting on what is achievable with that cartridge.

But compare Apples and Oranges

Saum = Magnum bolt face
Wheatherby and the Swede = Long action.

6.5x47L,6.5 Creedmore and 260 Rem =Medium action.

Now a 6.5 Grendell hmmmmmmm

Surely you did your research before you bought.
Just get some Re17 and push the envelope AndyRoo.
Waiting for Kicken to wade in on the Creedmore reference.

Rob I have a 6.5x47L

And that rant about the Creedmore was funny.
There is about a 6 page post on Accurate Shooter about the Creedmore.

Better than a 260 rem according to some.

As a person who has both, i wont say the creedmoor is better but they are both cracking calibre's. With 123gr projies the 260 is in front velocity wise, with a 140 loaded to mag length there is nothing in them as the projie takes up more case volume in a 260.

BUT if you have a single shot 260AI (like me) then its faster than both of them with 140's.

It can estimate the tipping point between safe and explosion in your hands. Will have a look tonight and see what i can find (havent looked for it before).
Usual rules apply though as it is an estimate only. If you can measure the H2O capacity of the case it will make the estimate a bit closer to reality.
