Yes, the cost and equipment thing is a load of rubbish.
My FO/Fly/1K BR rig is a trued rem 700, Tru Flite barrel, Pro cal laminated stock and up until the day before the Fly shoot in September had a 24x Tasco on it.
I'm currently running 1st on our club championchip for FO, do pretty well at 1K other than my own mistakes (one day that last shot wont drop out the bottom. No, really! ) and had a good result in the Pro Cal Fly this year. Before the new scope, the rifle had cost me all of 2 grand. I've beaten shooters whos action was worth more than my whole setup on a regular basis. You don't need the best of everything to be competitive, though it is nice to have.

The FS club from Vic have done a great job at modelling a shoot for themselves at the expense of the rest of the country. The figures being bandied about are going to be short lived as the majority of the new FS shooters are FB discards where the average age is well into the 60s. Shortly these guys will die and the numbers will go backwards. FO does and will attract a younger group of eager shooters that want more than just a reworked FB rifle. As stated above the cost of running a rifle is not relevant as if this was so, then FS would also be out of reach of most all the wingers. My advice to them would be to go and shoot small bore FC with a rimfire because that's where the fuck they belong. No loading and no barrel to burn out in a lifetime of shooting, so that's where they should all go to die and leave the real shooters have their fun.
The NRAA at the top end has changed a heap recently and they are certainly aware numbers are shifting rather than growing throughout their association. How else can one explain the sudden adoptation of 1K rules last week that would only revolve around maybe 40 shooters at best. No other reason than to keep and or attract members that they would loose if 1k was folded and left to the other group to cater for as the majority of these guys are not NRAA members, but will probably have to be now to continue shooting.
There is and never was a problem with FO so with time it will become a strong shoot just as long as the NRAA does not listen to the crap coming from the south from some very inexperienced shooting campaigners outside of the FB world. This whole scene to me right now is like a Harley Davidson and their company in the US, the most effecient way of turning fuel into noise without having the residual side effect of horsepower.

Hillarious..
This is the impression I get after being involved for a massive 6 weeks, there are some old school guys holding things back, but eventually they'll have to let got the reins I guess.

I am a strong supporter of tradition and have nothing but the greatest respect for those that have been in the sport for decades and have done great things in the past ... I have a member or two in my club that have been competing for over 40 years ! Their experience, guidance and friendship have been a joy and great benefit to my own shooting growth. but in this modern world, things move much more quickly. There is a great interest ( some may say its misguided but its not for me to say if it is or is not ) in precision marksmanship with the events in the middle east etc .. the folk lore of sharp shooters in the military,I have seen, interests a lot of newer and yet to become shooters. Our sport is right there , waiting for them to " come on board" . With the right guidance, training and support we can increase numbers in the sport greatly and also " guide" some of these guys away from the Rambo style guns and mentality so many of the non shooting world see and use to pigeon hole all of us. The window of opportunity is not endless and its very easy to miss the boat while factions and boys clubs are bickering and holding things back for what ever reason.

the tradition can and will continue in TR where it belongs .. this should not impact F Open. F Open is where new traditions begin.I am a strong supporter of tradition and have nothing but the greatest respect for those that have been in the sport for decades and have done great things in the past

G'Day All,
As a SSAA BR shooter looking for something different, I decided to shoot FO with my .223 (built as a FS), dropped a Jewel HVR into it set at about 4oz and run either 75amaxes or 80gn SMK. I've had a ball and learnt a lot along the way.
Your right though, traditionalists do not like shooters from left field who front up and start shooting reasonably well. Its all a bit non-conformist and something they cannot control or perhaps understand. I've seen the nonsense down sth first hand, so I tend not to worry about it, its not my problem but those who create the fuss who have the problem. As more shooters find out about the challenge of shooting 1/2moa out to 1000yds and how cheaply you can start, especially through forums like this, they will come. We just have to perservere and keep spreading the FO word as loudly and as far reaching as we can. Like any good pioneering missionary we will get ambushed or set upon......sh*t happens just dont let 'em wreck your enjoyment along the way.
After the last shoot I attended I asked if it were possible to shoot regularly at the club concerned and was (surprisingly and pleasantly) cordially invited to shoot with the club and even have FO targets available to shoot on. Given the invite, I'll definately shoot there when shiftwork allows and go with an open mind to learn as much as I can about LR shooting, while maybe pushing the FO discipline along a bit. It may be a coming together of minds.......time will tell.
As to being a lefty, I too have shot RH rifles off my left shoulder for many years in BR, varminting and FO. It is imho one of the fastest ways to shoot, so all you RH shooters listen up and start looking for a LH rifle.
Think about it; you can see the loading port which is crucial to eye hand co-ordination for smooth feeding the next round into the chamber, your trigger hand controls the rifle at all times, your other hand operates the opens bolt and reloads the rifle. I use the trigger hand thumb to flick the open bolt forward (pushing along the bolt centreline to avoid binding) and the other hand locks it closed. The only thing faster for me is my left handed, right load port, left eject BAT BR rifle!
Anyway keep spreading the gospel that is FO and do not be deterred! More importantly, just have fun; anyone having fun just has to be onto a good thing, right?
Cheerio Ned

ssshhh Ned Kelly , your letting out our left hand secrets to those evil righties !!!!
Well said about shooting f class .. it is a fun , interesting and very challenging sport . Thankfully it seems most clubs and club members " in the trenches" are friendly toward us . My club , Southern Highlands Rifle Club http://www.shrc.com.au has some great f open shooters in the ranks as well as great people and shooters no matter what the discipline , and everyone is always welcome to join us for a shoot or to join the club as a member

Do you shoot at Malabar? If so, with which club. I shoot FO there fairly often on a Sat - I'm the only FO shooter at my club but the FB guys there don't have any problem with it, they just want new shooters since quite a few of them are older gents.
On the topic of prone shooting left handed with a right bolt rifle - it's a great way to go. You don't have to come off your cheek weld and can stay still - shot to shot consistency is better that way. I picked that up from a shooting partner who is a lefty. I'm a right hander but my new barnard is being built left bolt for exactly that reason.
Cheers
