What do I want?
Been thinking that the safe if lacking in the airgun department (aka nil) and that needs to be rectified, not looking at doing anything soon but maybe in the next 12 months or so (will start stashing away a few bucks each pay now).
The airgun would be used for hunting Indian mynas predominantly and as kids get a little older would be used to teach them to shoot - not sure on whether I want a PCP or springer though?
Any suggestions?
Cheers
James

I suggest not shooting Indian minors. No matter how much you dislike them, shooting children of any race will end badly for you.

Yes, there is that minor stumbling block there, wonder if he changed to Indian "miners" it would be better, at least they can dig their own graves.

you have been really struggling with quality lately but that's an improvement, almost witty. Keep it up

Re: What do I want?
Would the HW30 then be too low of power to take rabbits and mynas?
My main thinking with starting teaching the kids was something less intimidating that the 22lr and I was thinking that I would set up the rifle on a rest/bags already set to go pointing at something like a clay target/water balloon etc, and then down the track if they enjoyed it and wanted to get into it a bit more I would look at getting something more specifically for youths.
Would I be best off looking for 17 or 22cals?

Re: What do I want?
As much as I love air rifles, unless you spend up a bit, those that would accurately take a rabbit at 40m make a bit of noise and carry a bit of weight. The mynas are easier and (IMHO) would fall to a HW30 with the right pellet.
But if you are willing to spend a bit, I saw a very lightweight FX Streamline last week. Incredibly lightweight.
Then again, if you just want to let the kids come in gradually, have you thought of running the 22lr with CCI Quiet or another of the "quiet" subs?

Re: What do I want?
Its a good question James.
I have thought similar with the kids. I haven't had a hw30/50 but had a hw95 and now the 97 and they are adults springers eg I couldn't see my kids cocking them yet....maybe that is a good thing though hmm.
I have thought if I can find a single shot Lithgow 22lr this would be ideal using subs/long zs cheap and no recoil and most likely lighter.
I do think if going air rifle springer is great start, no pump required just pick it up and some pellets and go I enjoy this and no pcp yet for me will need bottle etc

Re: What do I want?
IMO you should not mix PCP and teaching kids to shoot air rifles. If they can master a springer, any other recoiling rifle is a walk in the park. Springers have a double recoil.
It only takes 4-5 fpe to punch through a rabbits skull. Working range with low power springers is probably out to 30m, further in the right hands.
Don't get too sucked in with power. Accuracy is king with ARs. I take bunnies out to 55m with my 11.2 fpe HW97K and 77.
I'm thinking the 30 because of size. Power wasn't a consideration. I was shooting them yellow legs with a 4.9 fpe Diana 21 out to 32m. Chest shots (not at the sternum) drop them everytime.
177 with springers all the way for me.
They will be 5x more economical to run at around $15-20 for a tin of 500 Quality pellets versus about $100 for quality 22lr ammo. Z's, Quiet, ZLangs might even be more.
That just my view but. Others will tell you otherwise.
BTW how old are the kids and what sort of build?

Re: What do I want?
James,
When you teach kids to shoot the two pre-requisite is trigger control and sight alignment double acting recoil will teach them all sorts of bad habits nice light weight pcp would be they way I will be teaching my granddaughters.
The same way their father and uncle were taught.
Cheers
Gary
