6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with a 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284? I have this 6mm 10 twist barrel laying around and i dont know what to do with it. I was looking through the list of redding s type dies and these 2 calibres stuck out. 85-95gr projies would be moving out of either calibre.
6-284
Pros: Lapua brass, less case capacity improvement out of the box,
Cons: rebated rim, 284 guys have issues with pressure
6mm Remington AI
Pros: better case design??
Cons: need to form case to get capicity which isnt good on barrel burner, have to form from 8x57 if you want lapua
brass.

6mm-06? Dennis Tobler has the reamer as does Col Crittendon. 25/06 brass is plentiful.

Re: 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
you cant buy redding s type dies for them but i suppose you can use a 25-06 and a smaller bush.
Re: 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
Your brass issues are solved compared to the 284 based case ... there are reamers locally held, there's no fireforming...
Aussie Steve has done a 6mm/06AI type wildcat ... and its freaky being told to hold dead on fur at 300 yards, losing confidence and sneaking the crosshairs a smidge higher, and missing a smidge higher.

Seddo i have done so many 6mm wildcats i can't remember half of them. The two best by far and away for speed fitted to a powder burn rate of 2209/Re19 has to be the 6/6.5x55 or the 6SLR. The 6/284 suffers from getting the right burn rate powder to get things really moving along. My 6/284 x 1 3/4" was equal in speed to the full length cartridge because it was a better fit for the 2209 of the time, which is somewhat slower than current batches which can be closer to 2208. Jeff Rogers ran the 6/6.5x55 i did for him for a number of years in FClass using old batch 2209 and 105 Lapuas running them at 3450fps. Hard on brass but from a 100 yards to a 1000 there has never been a flatter shooting rifle i have ever seen. Simple chambering to, just run the 6BR reamer in till you hit length and the base of Swede brass fits perfectly to that taper. No idea why so few have done it as it is a spectacular cartridge with 70 to 75 grainers at close to 4k with good barrel life. There was a very good article in PS magazine about a similar cartridge pairing in 6.5 and 6mm Rogue done many years ago. The 6.5 is used very successfully by Pete Smith of Innisfail where he is a legend of FClass for those that know, but the 6mm version, the far better one in my view and by a very long way, is never seen.
My SLR using the old brown box Lapua 308 brass, the best by far, had the 103 Copperheads doing 3450 fps with light ejector marks. 3400 fps was a good safe load using a case full of Re19. New batches of 09 could not get near that and showed pressure at 3250 fps.
In a 10 twist barrel you may get the SMK 95s to fly, and everything else below is no issue except for bullet disintegration at speeds over 4K. At 3500 to 3600 fps the 95s with a .500 BC would be awesome as they are just about the most perfectly fitted pill for a 6 mil. Speed and BC to match where the 103-107s have the BC but are often hamstrung because of speed.
To me, from my dealing with the 6/284s over a number of years, they are missing something that i could never find. Maybe the original 2213 was the answer and i am just about certain Herb Valerius used that for his many Fly wins in Canberra. He did tell me once exactly what he used, but i cannot recall. But he never ran it hard because the Win brass, pre Lapua, was never that good. It is lately though. The Lapua not so.

Interesting to see your comments on the SLR with 2209. I got to 3300fps with it before it started spitting primers. Starting again with 2213sc and will go from there.Tony Z wrote:Seddo i have done so many 6mm wildcats i can't remember half of them. Re: 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
Tony beat me to it with the 6mm swede, I have chatted to him about it but I think that was a few years back before he put a few together. Looks like it performs admirably plenty of brass options out there too.
Tony with the running in of the 6br reamer I take it the end result is more of an improved case with less taper? Also just use a 6br die or have a swede die reamed out with the br reamer. Sounds like fun with 70 grainers after the success of necking the case up to 358 a 6mm would be fun
Scott what now lots of options

Re: 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
Too many options. I'm stuck because i like the easy option as its a barrel burner but AI cases give me a little chubby. Its also not a barrel i can see me putting that many rounds through which is good as it wont last long.

About 26 years ago I met herb and he set me on the right path from the word go showing me how to clean properly , full length size properly and a run down on several other things at a bench rest match
More helpful to me then than any one else

Re: 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
Out of those two my pick would be a 6mm Rem Improved.
75grain Vmax at 3850 FPS is not to be sneezed at.
Buy the Lap 8x57 brass neck it down and shoot it.

Re: 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
How will the 6mm Swede wildcats fit in a Rem 700 SA with detachable mag mods?
I am in exactly the same predicament.
I have a 10" twist 6mm barrel begging to be used as well, but will be screwed into a Rem 700. (soon to have detachable mag mods). One barrel in this gun will be chambered in 6 SLR for PSR comps, but I wanted something more overbore for the hunting barrel. How does a 243AI compare?

Re: 6mm Rem Imp or 6mm 284
Rod the Swede wildcats really need a long action and a slightly altered boltface. The 243 AI i know nothing about but the SLR is awesome and if you run the numbers, and i know you like numbers, it will level up with that 284 of yours at 900/1000.
I have to say, and this really gripes me as i hate this cartridge as a competition round with a passion, the 6x47 Lap and 87 Vmax with a guts full of Re15 explodes crows and bunnies like few can. Great 500 yard varminter cartridge but a really crap 1Ker. Re15 is the key, no other powder drives it faster and in that case gets some serious velocity. The impact of that Vmax hitting flesh is a noise to itself. Having said that, the SLR, Re15 and 87 Vmax would be even quicker. The Swede is a 2209/Re19 capacity case with Re19 better suited to the 75 to 88 grain pills ideally matched to a 10 twist tube.
