I'll see how it goes and if it's not coming out I'll buy a specific copper remover, noting I can't get anything until Tuesday...

Not worried about wearing the brush out as much as wearing out the bore.

Hoppes does take some copper out (thats what the blue staining on you first patches is), it just doesn't do the job as well as other solvents. No need to feel like an idiot.

I've been using Hoppe's as my normal cleaner but as I avoid looking down the hurty end of rifles I missed the obvious.

Still feel foolish for letting that happen, and not noticing much earlier.

I reckon Hoppes makes a good after shave a good scrub with some sweets 7.62 will do the job.

Just use it in a well ventilated room.

Sweets has the reputation for doing the job best, provided you can deal with the fumes.

Just scrubbed again and a lot of it is now gone, however there's still too much there.

Simple to use and IMHO does a better job than sweets.

I will add another vote for the Gunslick, use it on everything.

The .303's were the "scariest" with amount of copper coming out, though 3 applications and good as new.

OK, spent last night soaking, scrubbing (nylon), and patching and things are looking much improved. Still copper in there that will need a proper solvent but I'm feeling a bit better about it. Just dissappointed with myself for not noticing this.

I clean after every use, have been using Hoppes 9 exclusively, but am shocked to see how much copper built up. I won't say how many rounds of copper that is, as that would be too embarrassing to admit...

So here's the result of last nights effort, noting the pic seems to look more coppery than in real life. You can see a copper streak in one of the grooves on the left, the others look copper free.

At the very least I hope this helps someone here not make the same mistake I did.

The reason I ask is the machine marks in the bore are terrible and it will continue to foul badly. If it shoots, leave it be, but if it doesn't, it's a prime candidate for fire lapping.

I've had it a few years and it was shooting OK for a while but it just wasn't consistent enough. I had a few impressive groups at the range (sub MOA) but that was a while ago. I put that down to me and trying too many different types of ammo.

As discussed around the campfire, it's just not doing it for me. My thinking was that I was expecting too much from a entry level sporter...now I know better.

Tried to get Gunslick today but the LGS didn't have any so I got some Sweets 7.62.

Surprisingly, while the Sweets did remove some more copper it was nothing like the amount I was getting when using Hoppes.

I'm much happier now, but a bit disappointed with Marlin's idea of button rifling (this is a JM Marlin, not a Remlin). This is surprising after the Marlin marketing boys made such a big deal about the button rifling when these rifles first came out.

For what it's worth, I managed to take better pics this time round. In doing so I noticed that with the wrong settings (as per the original pics) the rifling appears to be more coppery than it actually is.

I hope to get some rounds down range this weekend and see if the accuracy, or at least consistency, has returned.
