Re: In the good old days
If anyone wants to see what the bush was like before rabbits, book a trip to Kangaroo Island. My missus grew up over there, so I've been back and forth a fair bit. Nice place.
No rabbits, no foxes. There are a (very) small numbers of feral pigs if you know where to look, some feral cats and wild dogs (not dingos, but domestic gone wild). Koala and Platypus are introduced. The road kill you see on a drive are possums and wallabies.
So not much hunting, but great fishing......

The Government is trying to remove all rabbits so no one takes up shooting.
I knew it was a conspiracy

Obviously never experienced pre calici numbers and certainly not pre mixo numbers.Tackleberry wrote:well here on the coast on all the farms I shoot the humble rabbit does no more damage to a farm than the wombat and bulls
and are piss easy to keep the numbers down with shooting .
I can remember buying a new 22 and a case of ammo with one of my first pay checks in the 80's, shooting most nights for a few hours and ammo was gone in a few weeks without even putting a dent in the rabbit population on one 1500ac property.
Growing up as a kid I used to shoot every day as well as regularly running traps on 400ac that was considered to have a low rabbit population. Would have averaged about 5000 rabbits per year and it was only the annual mixo out break that helped keep them in check.

Re: In the good old days
I recall an old scouting campsite in NSW that had ridiculous amounts of rabbits back in the 70-80's.
Driving in at night, every turn would light up at least 200 rabbits (bush with a access track). Assuming they'd stand still you literally would not have been able to walk through them.
At least we can see the numbers dropping, which is a very good thing for everyone but those that want to shoot them.
