I need a new gun safe

Post by trapper »

Hi All,
I currently have a so-called 3 gun safe for my two airguns. I just fitted a scope to my second airgun and I can no longer fit both guns in the safe. Obviously you can only fit 3 guns in this safe if they don't have scopes.

So I need a bigger safe. Probably a 5 gun safe. There's loads of them on eBay, but I'm worried about quality. Does anyone have any recent experience in buying a gun safe? The last post on gun safes on this forum was in 2013, so I'm looking for more recent info.

I live on the south side of Melbourne.

Cheers

G'day Trapper,

If you get at it quick, there is a Spika 6 gun safe on gumtree for $120.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/southban ... 1138590500

If you want to know what to look for, I like the door to be recessed to prevent levering it apart, and at least 3 bolts/pins, one up, one down and one to the opening side. I prefer keyed to combination (personal thing only), and a separate lockable ammo box is always a good thing, even for pellets (I also keep my stash of notes in one of mine, as I save up for my next gun).

The link below show the features I like.

Personally though, I'd jump onto that one on gumtree at that price...... if it is the model without the ammo box you can screw a cheap cash box inside the top.

Good luck, curan.

Thanks Curan,
Unfortunately the one on Gumtree is already sold. That was a bargain.

The style of safe in your eBay link is almost exactly like the one I have. It's just that mine is way too small.

This looks very similar: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162279972770 ... EBIDX%3AIT

A mate of mine that researches the best price to the enth degree, got a really good deal through the gun emporium near Tullamarine.

It's also a Spika, 12 gun I think.

Always buy a safe bigger than you need, you won't regret it down the track.

A 3 gun safe will for 3 shotguns or lever actions, that's about it.

Some are not deep enough to take a scoped rifle with target turrets

i recently bought one of those fort knox safes, pretty cheap but ok for the money but i also have some other security would be thieves have to get through first. I wouldn't rely on it if it was just bolted down in the middle of your garage etc. Depends how handy you are as well, as long as the locking mech is ok it doesn't take much to weld a few bits of couple mm thick angle iron around the safe to make it much harder to bend open on thinner walled safes for a bit of added security.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree the depth of the safe is a big factor. My airgun with scope and bipod needs to be put in the safe at an angle, effectively turning it into a one-gun safe.

Always buy a safe about twice the size you need! Yes, I regret owning two safes when I could have just bought a decently big one from the get go.

I now have 3 safes, a 3 gun (used for ammo more than anything), a 5 gun for a couple of air rifles and a 11 gun that has my powder guns in it.

I don't regret buying smaller at the start, as the smaller safes have evolved as I needed more. I don't mind, as I have use for them all, and still have room for more rifles later on. Horses for courses I reckon.

Hi Trapper

I have a Lokaway Safe here that I'm about to sell. It's a Lok4dk which is advertised as 10-16 guns but I say max of 8 or so. It's a great safe I just needed bigger. If you're interested, send me a pm and we'll work out a price.
