17 grain in a 17 Hornet
Re: 17 grain in a 17 Hornet
Was thinking of what Camel was asking and decided to have a go at building a longer jacket but in a 20 gn.
Turns out that it can be done, but I had to build an entirely new core seat punch to modify the core during seating.
Jacket was .612" long and finished at .595" long. No extra work in the process just had to build the tooling. Winchester case, derimmed to .220" and.716" long
Drawn down to .169" and .912" long
Trimmed to .612" long, core seated with a hollow pointing core punch and point formed to.595" long.
I will not be building any more for myself as I will run the 17 gn pills for a while and see how they go, but I am open to suggestions if some one wants something.

I am very interested how thee pills perform on foxes for skins.
I also would like to see how they handle a bit of speed in a 1-9 twist.

Bill, if ever I get down to Tassie again, I will be wanting a guided tour of your little home factory. Good stuff mate.
Re: 17 grain in a 17 Hornet
Hi Camel,
My set up is pretty basic. Not anything different to a normal reloading room but the press is a swaging press that I use for reloading. The reloading room itself is a storage shed and I have a little corner on the side. All the trimming is done on a drill press in the shed. A lot of my small gear is home made to suit what I want to build and not what a factory tells me I need. I am thinking of building a tredle operated trimmer. Just because I can.

Re: 17 grain in a 17 Hornet
Would like to see that as well, you thinking of doing it something like an old tredle Singer sewing machine type thing ?
I picked up an old electric sewing machine at the local used goods disposal depot (tip) that still works, have in the back of my mind that one day I will hook my trimmer up to the motor and use the variable foot throttle

Ref the tredle trimmer, yes that is the general idea. My reloading seems to have migrated to be electricity operated, ie trimmer, tumbler, kiln. I do not like this reliance and so am going old school but with the idea of quick operation. I have used a little hand crank operated trimmer and that has knobs on it!
The trimmer I built is exactly as you described Camel. Sewing machine motor turning the cutter head via a O ring drive belt, built on a solid steel Vee block arrangement with a quick change chuck and fine adjusting nut. Forster HSS cutter as the only purchased part and that was 25 years ago.
Foot speed control is fantastic. It is bulky but built like a tank and fast.

Hi Trevort,
Did that tip get damaged in transit or is it the angle that makes it look damaged? All jackets were trimmed square prior to point forming.

Re: 17 grain in a 17 Hornet
Well I set out a target at 100m. three loads, would say they are relatively mild . Groups were not exciting but tightened as they got faster. Test group with my known accuracy load wasn't much better than the hottest I tried with these so lying on the shearing shed entry platform might have more to do with groups than quality of pills. It's sighted in and I have 10 rounds left so hoping for fox or rabbit action tonight
