Iv got a FX Wildcat in .22 that ends rabbits pass 100m with 18.1gr JSB Exacts, ($25 tin of 500)
Never tryd a head shot on a fox but if you did I'm sure it'd be lights out at closer ranges. As far as taking down a deer at close range, think I'd rather .25 even bigger, .30 PCP's thump,
My PCP is regulated so I get around 80 accurate full powered shots from a 200 bar fill, that's alot of hunting, but if you need more air small carbon refill tank in your back pack will give you at least 300 more shots, and weighs hardly anything, $3000+ will get you a high end PCP with a few extras to get you started, Magnum help me out had to wait 5mths for my Wildcat and Royale 400, but not there fault,

I did have a Evanix Blizzard in .25 a while back and used it a bit for fox whistling. It produced 60 fpe and dropped foxes in their tracks at ranges out around the 40 odd meter mark.

I would not suggest it for anything bigger but.

it was shrouded and reasonably quiet for what it was ... but a newer un-shrouded one will bark.

Ill explain using a Wildcat cause that's what I know, (not a massive expert but)
So the U.S & U.K versions (cause they'r allowed) are shrouded, which basically means they have a silencing or baffling set up on the end of the barrel, they usually come standard in either a 1/2" unf thread screw on/off silencer type or an internal end of barrel insert in the full length barrel support,which significantly quiets the shot see pics, Aussie version has a non shrouded barrel only, muzzle break. No sound suppression at all. I got a carbon shroud put on mine with a 1/2" unf thread end cap, but um.. That's just cause I liked the look. Hopefully the pics help you see what I mean..

Out to 100 yards on foxes I'd be choosing the .22 Magnum.

At longer ranges on small pests like rabbits and Hares, the flatter shooting .17HMR wins hands down, problem is, the quality of the .17 ammo is terrible at the moment.

Air rifles on foxes for me is a no no, too much of a chance of a runner.
Everything deserves a quick despatch, it's our duty as ethical hunters.

The 43g Eunjin pellets out of the Evanix were effective and I never lost a fox shot with it, having said that they were all perfect head shots and close range only.

I figured towards the end but that I was constantly trying to milk the Evanix for power and basically trying to turn it into a rimfire.

It can be done with a PCP but I would consider the outfit that I had to be a minimum power level / calibre and then still be prepared to pass up all but perfect shots.

Been using 17 grain Hornady Vmax for small game and 20 grain XTP for thing up to goat and roo size. Range out to 150-170m for both. Have not had any issues with any of my Hornady branded ammo with less than 1/2" at 100m. Anything else is crap in my 452 Varmint. With the Hornady, it's head shots everytime.

Shot scores of foxes with my .17hmr and the 17gr Vmax, from zero to over 150m, with few issues.

You should start shooting Springers Neil. That should help in both your PCP and powder burner shooting.
