4wd tyre pressure
I'm not mechanically minded at all. Just got told off when the ute got serviced for not checking tyre pressure and letting them wear unevenly.
Then to make it worse the tyre bloke tells me I need to let air out of the tyres if I go off road and pump them back up when I get back to bitumen.
Is this really necessary? I don't do any real 4wd stuff. He recommended carrying a compressor to pump them back up.
There are haeps of cheap ones on eBay. Any use?

trev a cheap comp is a wast of money and airing down is not necessary for general run of the mill 4x4ing
i use an arb comp since all the cheap ones failed and they all will at the worst times (miles from nowhere
and with 18 psi in 3 tiers usually )but then thats just in very steep rocky terrain.
if you are just running the odd fire trail and paddock just leave them be .
around 38psi to 42psi for runaround but if you are carting wood in the back which i doubt i use just on 50psi .
but this is like whats the best action barrel pill scope so you can probably forget what i just typed .

You can just run your highway pressure if you aren't doing any harder 4x4 work - the only time I let mine down a bit is if I'm away for a week driving around tracks or paddocks on a shooting spot, as it makes it much more comfy.

yup, road pressures are fine,unless your climbing rocks or running on sand.

Yep fine to run tarmac pressure driving round paddocks and dirt roads. If I was going to be doing a lot of dirt roads I would often drop the pressures on my old hilux as if gave a better ride (ie kidneys lasted a little longer) or would drop to about 25ish if wheeling on rocks and mud. I we were hitting the sand I would go to 10. Main reason for dropping pressure is to increase the tyres foot print

I have found that many Tyre service joints over inflate 4x4 tyres.
Last couple of sets I have had fitted they were inflated to 50 bloody psi.
that was on a Nissan Patrol.
I have always run my tyres betwen 28-30 psi Period
Two times I have been on a beach I dropped them to around 18
Mud, rocks,wet grass,Capeweed and clay all at 28 psi.

Trev you'll find that if you lower your tyre pressures you might gain a little more traction as you essentially have a bigger footprint on the ground. Most tyre shops here seem to pump up to around 42 PSI, personally I think this is a bit high, I only run my ute at around 28 PSI in the rear and a little more in the front, normally around 30 PSI. It isn't necessary for most things to air down, but on sand and the like, it definitely helps to air down. Obviously the less air you have in your tyres the more comfortable they will be to an extent as well, so if your doing a lot of off road driving and or on corrugations, it might pay to air down for that reason alone if you've got the capacity to air up again when done.
On another note, those ARB compressors, whilst expensive are excellent, we have one that is 20 years old or thereabouts and has been an absolute workhorse as well as a few new ones, we would be lost without them in everyday farm life.

I just leave mine at 36psi - I couldn't be fucked letting air out then pumping it up again, I'm not doing any heavy 4wding or beach work so I don't see the bloody point.

I have the higher capacity one - I think they do one that is just for running their lockers and one that is for pumping up tyres. I have their one that is built into a toolbox and have had it for nearly 10 years and its never missed a beat - well worth the 300 odd bucks or whatever I paid for itDSD wrote:Arb make 2 different compressors which one are yours?
