HMR?

an interesting outcome from my last range trip is that my son is now big enough to properly control the rifle on the bench and focus properly through the scope.

I bought my 22 as a "fun gun" burn ammo and start to enjoy it sort of thing to get him in.

He got quite visually more enjoyment when i handed him the 223 and then 6/250 with better optics and accuracy. I think he could be a chip off the old block.

So, I avoided an HMR cos I cant reload it (went for a 17 mach fireball instead) but if RyanT might get more excited by accuracy I thought I might swap the 22 fun gun for an HMR. He can blast 50 rounds at the range and I can use it for the short range stuff in the field occasionally.

Going for lightweight and reasonable quality can anyone recommend better than a CZ in sporter weight?

ruger or better yet sako quad but just leave it as a 17hmr and put decent optics on it.

yes thought Sako quad with HMR and 22 barrels but the expense isnt justified.

Tell me more about the Rugged?

as little as possible! depends on what i get for the henry but a new cz is around $800 in sporter weight. Do you know someone with a second hand one?

I've got a mate with a CZ American style .22WMR that he is thinking of getting rid of. You could have your .17 barrel reammed to HMR and get shane to wack it in for you.

I have read the 204 ruger got you right back into your shooting costing you a lot of money. Well a 17 hmr cz sporter with leopold 4-12x40 has done the same thing to me. You will love the 17hmr, cant go wrong what ever you buy. Brother has a Marlin synthetic heavy barrel that shot 10 shots into a 5 cent at 50m when we bought it. It is still light enough to carry around its just the cz has a bit more quality about it. The cz sporter is a better gun than the heavy barrel cz. Just better balanced and will shoot as good. Just a tip with HMR is dont clean barrel often as the more shots through it the tighter the groups will get. Dont clean mine to well over 100 shots than it dosnt hit its straps again until at least 30 shots. I still have not got myself a 204 cant decide what I want either a full rem custom with A3 stock or a kimber varmint or wait a bit to see if I can get hold of a cooper. Dont think I really need one with a T3 varmint 223 that shoots better than I can and a cz 527 223 sporter thats a great walk about. Ah well gives me something to think (dream )about during days.

single shot 17hmr nef sportsters go for around 350 brand new. Not as efficient as a bolt action, but will get you to make each shot count. When you think about it you should only need one shot with the hummer as you wont shoot anything larger than a bunny (foxes maybe). Mine is very accurate with federal vmax or hornady vmax rounds and headshots are easy as long as the wind is minimal.

The wooden stock Marlin is good value for money, Fenrings mate has one i think that he tweaked up with thumbhole stock. i belive you can get a after marlet trigger aswell.

Yeah, be got the basic 917V and put a Revival Industries Tundra laminate thumbhole on it. The basic rifle was about $450, comes with two mags. He also had a trigger job done too, lightened it up a fair bit.

I know where you can get a CZ 452, Varmint in 17HMR in like new condition for a lot less than $800.

Knackers how much does your mate want for his? I think Shane stocks 17hmr barrels.

Matang, 2 223s? Some dont share my view on the merits of customising a CZ but all the Calhoon rifles are built on the action. Why dont you re barrel the 527 and make a 20 tac/prac shooting necked down Lapua brass from a match grade barrel with Shane working his magic on the set trigger? Performance is practically the same as a 204

go the varmint weight trev in the CZ- there isn't much difference in weight between it and the sporter and all the extra is in the barrel which will make it easier to hold steady in field positions

I know it will be used by your kids as well but that will get stronger and the weight wont mean anything for them

The varmint may also have the better trigger on it as well- cannot remember exactly.
