BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
Hi All,
I'm having trouble keeping the scope securely mounted on my BSA Meteor. I dunno if the dovetail is worn or if I'm using poor quality mounts. I bought the gun second-hand with the original iron sights, so I don't know if the dovetail has ever been used.
You can see the metal on the mount is rounded off. The kids have been shooting it and I suspect they just kept shooting after the scope came loose, thus rounding the clamp on the mount. Having said that, it's never been a solid mount and needed constant tightening.
Is there a better way to mount the scope on a Meteor? Or should I just go back to the iron sights?
P.S. I have a lathe and a milling attachment, so I can make/modify parts (where legal to do so).

Check you dovetail size.

Also fit a stop pin if you have rings with it and hole on dove tail.

Google BSAOG, I think you'll find the site of interest, pages of info dedicated to the Meteor in all its guises.
I'd go with Sportsmatch mounts and fit the arrestor pin that the mounts come with.
Have fun.

Re: BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
Thanks Gents.
The scope I have is similar to this one. I bought it from the same supplier:
http://www.airgunspares.com/store/produ ... fle-Scope/
It came with the mounts and cost less than the cost of a pair of Sportsmatch mounts alone. I guess that's why the supplied mounts are poor!
I think this is the Sportsmatch mount I need:

I'll have a look at BSAOG.
It's 11mm.daisy wrote:Check you dovetail size.
The hole in the dovetail is too far back to fit the pin. Could I safely drill another hole?daisy wrote:Also fit a stop pin if you have rings with it and hole on dove tail.

Re: BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
I just found a Meteor manual online. It recommends using a only one-piece scope mounts. Now I'm confused.

Re: BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
After a bit of research I've determined that my Meteor is a Mk 5.
I've decided I will:
Dismantle the gun,
Strip the paint off the barrel and blue it,
Strip the stock and re-finish it,
Replace all seals and the spring with a kit like this: https://www.customairseals.com/product/ ... -seal-kit/
Fit a one-piece scope mount.

Sounds like a nice winter project.

Re: BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
Oh dear, I should never have put you onto the BSAOG site.
Sportsmatch do a 1 piece mount, they even do a Dampa mount for hard recoiling air rifles, I should think yours isn't FAC so the standard 1 piece should suffice. 1 piece are recommended to give more grab under recoil, hence why 2 piece are used on non recoiling PCP's
Enjoy the project, I'd be interested to see how you go with it.

Re: BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
Thanks again fellas.
I saw an Aussie bloke on Youtube who owns a business called Custom Air Seals. He did a good video on dismantling a Meteor. Looks pretty straightforward. I'll dismantle it today and see how the internals look. I'll take it from there.

Re: BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
The third pic down is indicative of the rings banging on to the end of the rails where they end on the action. Thus, only one ring has the rounded end, and it looked like the rear one. I would suggest moving the rings past the anti recoil screw hole on the action, tighten them and not use the recoil arrester screw at all. The Meteor realitically doesn't produce enough "recoil" to shake too many things loose.

Yes it was. It slipped back and the kids just kept shooting, so the mount got damaged.grmkc wrote:Thus, only one ring has the rounded end, and it looked like the rear one.
These mounts are so poor that even a Meteor can loosen them. I'll buy mounts made from harder material and with sharper dovetails that will mate more fully with the gun's dovetail rail.grmkc wrote: The Meteor realitically doesn't produce enough "recoil" to shake too many things loose.

Re: BSA Meteor Scope Mounting
Not necessarily - I've got a Leapers Accushot one piece mount on my Diana 350 Magnum BUT the arrestor stud is a very important part of the mounting setup. It doesn't shift on the grooves and the scope doesn't shift in the rings and this gun has a fairly noticeable recoil pulse.
The arrestor stud is very important on a gun like the Meteor with those short and shallow grooves. It appears to have a hole for one but maybe it's not in the right spot for most generic mounts?

I'm with fenring. There are other brands that do a great job & without the price tag. Like everything else, brands trade on their reputation. Good thing is, they have a great range.
