HMR big game load

Post by 220 »

Have had a HMR of some description since they were released but had never tried the 20gr load.
Got caught short on my preferred 17gr V-max load so grabbed some 20gr Hornady and CCI 17gr HP from the shop.
Still haven't tried the CCI, a quick sight in with the 20gr and first group went 12mm @ 100m, handed it to 110 and he put a 17mm group down, Gave daughter a go and hers went 19mm. Given Moa at 100m is 29mm these averaged 0.55moa across the 3 of us.
I think what is left in the shop will end up in my ammo stash

Sounds good mate, I tried some of the 20gn when I got my first HMR, dunno what brand but probably Hornady, my Ruger 17/77 didn't like them, neither did the CZ varmint I had, touchy little buggers with ammo, but they sure do perform when you luck onto what they like.
Sounds like you get the best Mates Rates, you being your mate.

Tried the 20gr XTP when I got my Savage, it shot OK, around 25mm at 100m. Shot a pig and a few foxes with it. TBH I don't need the extra penetration of that load and the 17gr Vmax shoots flatter past about 120m so that's what I've stuck with.

Nice mate. Both my hmr's have shot best on paper with 20gr loads. On furries the plastic tips have shot best and the 20gr ones seem to sort of zip through. 17gr TNT seem to be a bit of a compromise but the rare as hens teeth here :( currently having to run 20's or the 15.5's

Don't think performance on game will be a issue, I rarely use it on rabbits and anything bigger its a head shot or nothing most of the time.
Daughter does use it a bit for rabbits but I cant get her to aim at anything other than the head  shot about 20 last school holidays and despite constantly reminding her they were only for the dogs it didn't matter if it as 25m or 125m she kept hitting them in the head.

That's interesting Camel. My CZ452 Varmint will only shoot Hornady in its two forms. Groups are like 220's.

All the other brands in 17 or 20 grain shoot like my 20g Fausti.
