Most frangible .264 cal pill?

Post by Mulga »

What's the most frangible .264 cal pill at non magnum velocities for thin skinned animals (dogs, cats, rabbits etc).

Vmax?

Cheers

100 grain ballistic tips send crow feathers everywhere and drop foxes on the spot and well rabbits don't last long :)

Yet to splatter anything with the 95 vmax but being a vmax should do about the same or more destructive :)

I have also used the ballistic tips on piggie and pulls them up.

Sierra 85gn Varmit hollow point.

Don't fly to well as the BC is not flash at .225 @ 2800+, but pretty much equal to a 55gn 22cal (.237 @ 2800+), or a 39gn 20cal (.255 @ 2800+). The difference is negligible out to 300m.

Even a 260 will launch these at an easy 3500fps. My Grendel should be good for 3200fps!

I'll have to get some of those for mine.

I ordered a box of 95 vmax to see how fast they would go.

Why would you compare these three projectiles to each other, would it not be better to compare the same weight in something like 243 and 257 calibre, even 7mm (if they make one) ?? You don't see many cartridges or shooters that run 55gn 22 cal or 39gn 20 cal at 2800fps.

Ryan, yes, thankyou for pointing that out to me, but the other two will out + the other across the board. Apples with apples should apply when comparing things like this.

I use 110gn vmax in my .270 (.277) and they hammer thin skin game. Don't expect much to be intact afterwards. Literally cut a fox in 2 the other night......I'd imagine they would be just as frangible in .264.

Shot 100 of those 85gr Sierrra Varminter at foxes, pigs and roos from my 6.5x55 - yes, quite frangible. :)

Better by far than the 90gr Speer TNT.

Do the 85 & 95 gr pills over-stabilize in a 1:8 twist and hold together, or does that make the effects more spectacular?

I chose those bullets because they are common bullets out of their respective calibres. I made no suggestion that someone would run them all at 2800fps, in fact I made the point that a 260 Remington should be able to get them downrange at 3500fps.

The point of my comparison was that despite the 85gn bullets having a relatively poor BC for their calibre, their BC was very similar to common varmit bullets.

FWIW, using JBM Calculator with a 200m zero...

39gn @ 3800fps (aka 204 Ruger)
300m drop is 5cm, velocity is 2546fps
400m drop is 11.6cm, velocity is 2149fps

55gn @ 3300fps (aka 223 Remington)
300m drop is 7.2cm, velocity is 2125fps
400m drop is 16.8cm, velocity is 1786fps

85gn @ 3500fps (aka 260 Remington)
300 drop is 6.6cm, velocity is 2201fps
400m drop is 15.4cm, velocity is 1865fps

So, it is clear that over 400m, the 85gn out of a 260 Remington drops 4cm more (about half a rabbit, or less than 1/3 MOA) than the darling little 204 Ruger (which is the 20cal benchmark cartridge) , but 1.4cm LESS than the very common 223 Remington (also the 22cal benchmark cartridge).

If shooting the 85gn bullet causes you to miss more bunnies at 400m than your ability to guess wind or fine details of holdover then you are a better marksman than most.

Not that I have noticed.

I can pitch some downrange in my 6.5 SAUM if you are truly interested. I should be able to get 3700fps from them.

I never had issues in my old swede. They are meant to be a little faster than 1:8 even. Now not 3500 buy if it was going to have issues it would show up. They never seem to mind a jump to lands. I just load so they stay in the case.

I'm using the 95gr vmax in my swede at around 3250fps with great results. Have shot plenty of crows, foxes and rabbits with that projectile.
