Re: CZ 527 20VT on a budget plus DIY stock
Have done a three panels of checkering. The curves of the pistol grip were a bit daunting. Here is a photo of the checkering tools for those who have not seen them, just small shaped files. They are loosing there edge but will get this stock finished.
-do the initial spacing cuts shallow so the smooth spacer blade can track in a fine cut line. This makes the spacer track accurately as there is less room in the groove for pushing the cutter off line.
- Make sure you pick up the right cutter...
- Rotate or move the stock in the cradle to suit the cutter, don't try and do the last 5mm of a cut around the pistol grip without moving it to save time...
- Keep cleaning the files as you go, they build up with sawdust and then go from a cutter tracking nicely to a what seems like slick piece of steel skating across ice in the wrong direction but leaving a gouge behind it. .
- Take your time, enjoy the challenge.
Here is the initial set out. Finished Still a lot to master.

Seriously looking like a beautiful stock. When you say file do you actually move them across the piece. I had thought it was a hold an tap but will have to do some reading and youtubing.

Gary, yep we should organise a day one weekend could kidnap Stinkitup on the way.
Stinkitup, it is just filing grooves. Really simple job . It is not that hard just fine detail and familiarity with the tools like any trade.

Here are a few more pics of the checkering process .
I am under instruction from the Wood Whisperer to keep applying the oil and rubbing until it glows. So that's what will happen till the metal work turns up.

The checkering is finished, OK for a first attempt. Looks perfect without my glasses on I am under instruction from the Wood Whisperer to keep applying the oil and rubbing until it glows. So that's what will happen till the metal work turns up.

Love the way that turned out Ruce, ended up looking fantastic. Well done mate, and for a first attempt that checkering looks as good as some I have seen from people that have been doing it for a lot longer than you have. Ya won me.

If I could produce a finished stock like that I'd be very pleased, albeit critical of my own work.
As for your results, be very very pleased at the outcome. You've done what most of us could only dream to achieve.
