Bruce that looks fantastic! I will have a crack one day when there is time......hmmmm maybe that will happenB4408 wrote:Have done a three panels of checkering. The curves of the pistol grip were a bit daunting. Here is a photo of the checkering tools for those who have not seen them, just small shaped files. They are loosing there edge but will get this stock finished.A couple of things I have learnt:
-do the initial spacing cuts shallow so the smooth spacer blade can track in a fine cut line. This makes the spacer track accurately as there is less room in the groove for pushing the cutter off line.
- Make sure you pick up the right cutter...![]()

- Rotate or move the stock in the cradle to suit the cutter, don't try and do the last 5mm of a cut around the pistol grip without moving it to save time...![]()

- Keep cleaning the files as you go, they build up with sawdust and then go from a cutter tracking nicely to a what seems like slick piece of steel skating across ice in the wrong directionbut leaving a gouge behind it.

- Take your time, enjoy the challenge.![]()
Here is the initial set out. Finished Still a lot to master.
