Post by johnty »

I have been using 130 gr berger hunting and 120 target boattail in the 6.5 x 47 and they group better than 16mm 5 shot groups. Have any you guys got experience using bergers for hunting, and i not interested in how vlds go as they arnt hunting rounds.

Berger 130gn VLD Hunting, metplatted and pointed, 261m, Fallow neck. Starts out at 3250fps, was doing about 2880fps at point of impact. She didn't fall over, so much as dropped on the spot like all the strings were cut instantly. Only the skin and windpipe were holding the head on. When we got to her, the head was folded back along the lower neck like a blade in a pocketknife.

This bullet was going about as fast as a 260/6.5x47 Lap will throw them at the muzzle.

.308 Norma Magnum
168gn Berger VLD HUNTING

Unfortunately no pictures but the Sambar dropped like it had been pole-axed, broke nearside shoulder, turned heart/lungs to mush and came to rest under the skin on the off side.

Almost as good as my 9.3x62

Not sure why you think VLD's are not hunting pills though, as Berger themselves advertise both VLD Target and HUNTING.

Berger says that the Target VLD does have a thicker jacket, and whilst I've not used Berger target bullets on critters, I have made the mistake of using Sierra and Scenario on critters and they perform very badly.

The Hunting VLD works well.

I tested the Berger 140 Hunting VLD yesterday in the 260Rem ,with great results. 8)

I normally run the Berger Hybrid 140gr pills and wanted a hunting variant; I used the same powder charge, primer, case etc. VLD's being reputedly jump fussy, I wanted to find the best jump. I tested 0.130, 0.090, 0.050, 0.020, 0.010 jump. 0.050 jump being the best, with 2x5 shot groups under 10mm @ 100m. POI was unchanged, velocity was very close to identical.

I look fowards to dropping some critters with them :rifle2:
