Hey Dave, new Norma brass measures 11.80mm. Out of interest I measured some Winchester and Federal brass which also measured 11.80mm. The win and fed brass has been reloaded twice.

thanks tassie

that is very interesting.

thanks for taking the time to post your findings.

i was hoping that the Norma, (and RWS and Lapua) would have a greater web diameter than S&B 243 brass.

new S&B 243 measures 11.87mm (.4673)

cheers

Hey Tassie, great way to make a first post mate, chucking stuff up to help another forum member. Welcome into the fold mate. :D With a name like that, I take it you are from the Apple Isle, or as some may know it, The Land of Two Heads.

Dave, why is the web diameter required, something to do with the Red Back trials ?? Fitting into your chamber closer than other stuff ?

g'day mark

yeah mate, spot on.

" why is the web diameter required, something to do with the Red Back trials ?? Fitting into your chamber closer than other stuff ?"

selected and sorted S&B brass is excellent, it just annoys me that both batches that i have tried, have numerous cases that either won't fit in the priming tool shellholder or the press shellholder.

cheers

If the brass is good, I'd be tempted to try and touch up the shell holders with a Dremel. Doesn't sound like there is much in it.....?

Either that or try different shell holders in the hope there is something better. Would you like me to measure one of my shellholders when I get home (a week away)?

hi curan

mate, thanks for the offer, out of 40 cases, i have 25 which are OK and they will do for the present and future uses.

so far, at the pressures/velocities that the Howa has been running at, i expected more web swelling and hence i was interested to see how the S&B brass compared to the others in unfired web diameters.

i have lee, hornady, rcbs, redding etc, shellholders and some of the S&B brass is tight in all of them.

i think the problem lies with S&B poor machining or lacking QC checks..

a combination of thick and oversize rims and oversize extractor grooves is causing the interference with the shellholders.

cheers

Dave- the lapua palma brass is fantastic stuff if you want to stoke it up a little. The extra brass in the case head is good to have for that sort of stuff. Neck it down to 7-08, 260 then 243. You might need to turn it along the way, but will definitley need to do it at the end. It worked great for 260 improved with CCI450 primers. Cant help you with measurements for it, but i just used a 260 collet die and a redding body die for my resizing and it worked fine.
