204 to 6x47 brass

Got a mate who has picked up a Rem 40XB in 6x47, the old version, nor Lapua, , 222Rem Mag brass is pretty well rocking horse shit. Told him it might be just a matter of necking some 204Ruger up to 6mm, then running it through a 6x47 F/L die. What do you reckon ??

204 was 222 magnum with shoulder adjusted and neck down then trimmed , so in theory if you neck up then as long as overall length is ok then it should be all good

I haven't studied the chamber diagrams, but would setting the barrel back by 2mm and running it as a 6mm-223 work?

my LGS had 200 222 rem mag cases a while ago do you want me to see if he still has them

As Tackleberry says, the Sako 222Mag cases are a little more available than they were.

Failing that, 204 cases could be used as a start point. If he needs to borrow some dies, give me a yell as I have a 3-die set for 6x47.

Thanks fellas, I reckon it would be a bit of stuffing around, but should in theory work out ok. I did suggest rechambering to 6x45, but he don't want to go down that path for some reason. He has some already formed cases and a set of dies that came in the deal. Jason, its already a 6mm mate, just chasing brass, not a re-chamber job. Tackleberry, if you could make an enquiry it would be appreciated. thanks

I necked 264 to 358 in 3 steps so 204 to 243 should be fine. I used lee ezexpander decapping pins and had no should failures.

I don't know the differences in shoulder angles etc but hopefully once necked up its a shoulder bump and fireform at worst unless the 204 version has less taper.

Camel I have a sinclair expander die and tapered mandrel set. Unless I leant it to someone and forgot!!

I would do it in two stages, first to 22 and then to 6mm.

I would anneal at the 22 stage (unless the first few split) others may have a different opinion and anneal before starting.

I'm happy to lend you the die and mandrels or do it for your mate

I agree totally.

I have gone from 22cal to 30cal in 1 go, 7mm to 375cal in 1 go and 6mm to 338cal in 1 go. I didnt check them for concentricity but they were done with redding taper plugs and all came out fine after they were set up. I think i lost about 5 221fireball cases getting the dies set up and then lost 2 in 195 cases.

THLD tell the old mate he is wasting his time.

I will give him enough for his old worthless Rem so he can by a Howa in a real 6mm (243)

Ok thanks Trev, Ill let you know what his answer is and get back to you if it comes to necking up stage.

Onya Tackleberry, would appreciate it mate, don't matter if they are Sako, he is after all only a filthy brain dead roo shooter. I don't think he has the class to appreciate Sako quality.

I somehow don't think he wants to sell it mate, he has been chasing it for a fair while and finally nagged the bloke long enough so he gave in and sold it to him. He did also mention his other one which is in that useless, god forsaken, neither your arse nor your elbow cartridge.................222Rem.

He had a Hooower and wasn't real impressed with it from what I can gather, muttered something about how he "bashed the fucken useless piece of shit around a strainer post one night" after it wouldn't shoot up to expectations.
