338 Win Mag
Got an invite from a mate to head up to the NT to hunt a buff either late this year or 2016.
There's a Howa 338 in at work yelling at me to give it a home.
I will not feel guilty if it sits in safe ,just can't justify a big outlay.
Used to own a Winchester XTR in 338'Win before the marriage thing happened,so know what it can preform like on hogs n deer.
Looking for a scope in the 2-7 or 2-8 with an objective bell to gather some light if needed.
Don't like straight tube scopes.
Would love some projectile info from anyone that has one or used one on NT buff.
Will be trying for Big Bulls, ones with big horns to put on the wall to hang my hats on.
Thinking may be round nose soft points as top two in magazine with 2 solids for 3rd and fourth if things get close and personal or just load with a Barnes.
Weights.?......?
Will be hunting on foot and have a mate with a 416 as back up.
Wood liege.RN,PP.Solid
Fark spell queck.
Barnes Tsx or TTSX.
Nosler partitions.
ACP.
Mick 762 has given me some great info so far.
Cheers big G.

I dunno if I would stuff around with different projectiles in the magazine, just use your 300gn RNSN and stop shooting when you have run out of that mag full. Then step aside and let your mate chime in.

Re: 338 Win Mag
Nah mate, haven't used them, but they sound like the real deal. I have some 200gn Woodies that I have loaded in my 338/06, still haven't kilded a critter with them, but would take that rifle and that load if I were to get the chance going up there. Been plenty of big critter killed with 200gn Speer hot cores in 338/06, so reckon the Woodies would be just as good if not better.

Re: 338 Win Mag
I had a good run with 250 Norma's in my 338 on buffalo when I still lived up in the NT and would be just as happy with the 250gn woodleighs that I saw others use. I had a better run with my 338 and 250s than I did with the 375 with 300s. Can't comment on the 338 300gn woodleighs.
If they don't work you will probably need something a lot bigger.
My only tip after shooting buff, is keep shooting until they are down and don't expect 1 shot kills unless it's behind the ear.
