HBN anyone use it?

Hex Boron Nitride. I saw a clip on YouTube about using coated bullets in this stuff and the bloke was getting a decrease in velocity spread from cold to warm barrel, easier barrel cleaning and potential longer barrel life. I have no idea if it is useful for corrosion protection but the bloke said it does not promote corrosion.

So does anyone use it here? It comes in two forms. Powder which is used for coating bullets via a tumbler and a new spray can which might be good for coating a barrel. I looked for some locally and was shocked to see it was $30/oz! I found a Canadian company selling this stuff for much cheaper. I was thinking about giving this spray a go for coating the barrel.

In the YouTube vid( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rDHYzGg7Ucc)the bloke says that this stuff (used as a coating on bullets) is much better than moly because it has a much higher temp range. Ie it won't burn in the throat like moly does. And what sparked my interest was how when used as a barrel coating, it can fill in imperfections in the rifling. Making for easier barrel cleaning and longer life. He does day there is a minor drop in pressures and velocity because of better lubrication. But this can be a bonus because if a load is accurate but is giving pressure signs, this will lower the pressure more significantly than velocity. Allowing the load to be tweaked to achieve the sweet spot in velocity before the pressure signs come back.

Is it going to make a difference in the way something acts when a bullet hits it?

For hunting purposes I doubt you will find it worth the effort. Maybe if you were after benchrest accuracy at long range and had a dog of a barrel that needed bullet lubrication to stop it fouling you would use it. Would go moly before HBN personally but try to stay away from both- to the point if a barrel doesnt perform just get a new one and stop wasting valuable powder and projectiles in it.

I was more thinking of using it to aid cleaning. Swabbing the barrel after it's clean is supposed to aid in cleaning. The bloke in the cleans with a bore snake and only cleans every couple of hundred shots.

I am not really planning on coating bullets.

As with moly you can buy projectiles already coated in it if all you want to do is try it before going all out.

Hmmm. Cannot find the aerosol can stuff in Australia and they want huge money for shipping from Canada. Might be thinking a whole lot more about this!

I use it on all my projectiles. From all the research I did a few years back to me it will be worth the trouble to coat my projectiles. Just be aware that it does make them slippery. By that I mean they are harder to pick up when reloading as the little buggers slip out of your fingers.

Ok Mr Fozhunter223-Pete, you now have my attention, never looked into coating projectiles, but I would be interested in knowing your process, a few photos if they are available would be good. There may be other who would enjoy reading about it.

I use it on a 6.5mm target rifle of mine which used to foul too early and I use it on my 17 Rem, just so it doesn't foul out too early on a good day out. If you have a barrel which does foul too early, then yes it does help for sure. My 6.5mm could only go 20 shots before accuracy started to fall off, now it goes over 100 rounds, which is when I felt guilty and cleaned it. I did leave it in the bore for months at a tine and looking at it through a bore scope, it has not corroded, or pitted in any way.

I have it here ...I used to use it on a wssm but heres the thing.
If you are chasing velocity then you need to understand that hbn reduces the friction of the bullet.
Therefore if you want the same velocity you need more powder.
Most rifles that are barrel burners as you are no doubt aware eat away the throat.
So now your coating bullets in an attempt to slow barrel wear and improve accuracy slightly- but you are reducing throat life as a payoff.

Check out the Dyna Bore Coat. This is a liquid ceramic bore coating that fills in the barrel voids. It also will, I believe, slow down throat wear. I swab my barrel throat every 1000 rounds. Still in the trial stages but early indications on my 6BR is that it works. When I did my 22-250 I had to increase my powder charge to get my needed pressure back for my sweet spot but I picked up an additional 1000 odd FPS.
