Re: An old Axe video but it's tops!
thats a little gem keith.
i love shit like that.
i fit all my axe handles and hammer handles, pretty much the same way he did it but with less and probably not the right tools.
to see the gear he uses is great.
also great to see the different head styles and axe types.handle designs.
some of those handles look far better than the generic crap we get in aus.

This is great and it's clear the guy knows more about axes than just about anyone else... Some of it may seem a bit anal, but in the end you can see the quality workmanship shine through.
At the very least, I now know how to select an ax handle (as I'm still working my way through it).

Great stuff!!
Really good to see how it should be done.
It's given me some inspiration to get the old axe fixed up.
Might have to find me a hickory handle.
Thanks for posting that.

Not sure if this one has been posted before, but it's one I've had saved to my favourites for a while and like to watch from time to time when I feel like being amazed whilst being made to feel completely untalented and emasculated at the same time

Great videos, used axes, adzes and when a boy the crosscut saw, never had a broad axe. Most people today have no idea what there for or how to use them.Had a neighbor ask for a loan of an axe last year, after some discreet inquiries,it turned out he wanted to chop some turf out of his lawn.Fortunately I had a rough old axe in the shed,he wasn't getting my good one.

Yeah it's bloody hard lending out quality tools. I only do it if I know what they're doing.. I'd have a hard time lending my Grasfors Bruks outside of my view anyway!Flash Gordon wrote:Great videos, used axes, adzes and when a boy the crosscut saw, never had a broad axe. Most people today have no idea what there for or how to use them.Had a neighbor ask for a loan of an axe last year, after some discreet inquiries,it turned out he wanted to chop some turf out of his lawn.Fortunately I had a rough old axe in the shed,he wasn't getting my good one.

Re: An old Axe video but it's tops!
i dont lend tools full stop.
if they need to use them they can do it at my place.
NOBODY looks after your tools like you do.
i just went out scouting some standing dead wood for the fire.
took my axe to check hollowness of the timber.
bugger me if the grain isnt going the wrong way in the handle.
and after all the time it took to get a good fit.
bloody axe blade isnt shaped right either.
too much on one side.damn it.
took ages to get sharp, now i gotta do it all again.
its good to know how to do things properly, but it creates more work if you find out after the fact
oh well,such is life

Re: An old Axe video but it's tops!
I just accept the fact that even if the axe was hung right, the grind correct, the grain in the handle running the right way, the stars all aligned....I'd still be shithouse at swinging an axe..so I use a chainsaw...........great men didn't invent the combustion engine just for us to keep walking or riding horses, therefore I surmise that the chainsaw wasn't invented for us to continue using cross cut saws and axes (with exceptions)LoneRider wrote:i dont lend tools full stop.

Re: An old Axe video but it's tops!
ive been dropping standing dead wood with the axe for about 13 yrs.
i chopped them into posts then brought them home to slice with a drop saw or power saw.
[i was getting them from the tip,if they worked i used them, when they didnt i took them back ]
i was given a chainsaw not too long ago and have since put a chain and bar on it.[was the only thing wrong with it]
what i cut the first time i used it,would have taken me a week or longer with the axe.
now i think i will relegate it to picking trees to drop, and not much else.
its like 303's or black powder arms, good for nostalgia or when nothing else is working.
sean.

Re: An old Axe video but it's tops!
Hell you can't argue that a chainsaw isn't better it is, I have a small forest axe and I just love it around camp. To be honest I don't use the, that much for real work I just love the craftsmanship of good quality ones..
