tempermental fussy rimfires.!!!

Post by native hunter »

G"day All
Last night I was at a local rimfire shoot in lismore and tested a few different types of ammo in my annie 54.
I have been having good sucess with eley match eps and decided to try some tenex and eley match semi-auto.
The night started well with me getting a perfect score in the benchrest shoot, this was a good night for testing ammo.
I shot 3x 5shot groups with three different types and was amazed to find that the gun liked the eley match EPS better than tenex and match semi-auto,the average for the three groups was .226 for match EPS as opposed to .340 and .350 for semi-auto and tenex respectively.(yeah thats right it hates the tenex most of all).
I use SK match on most practice shoots and will be sticking with eley match EPS for all other shoots.
PS my best group of the night was .130 for 5 shot group. at 50mtrs.
It just amazes me how rimfires are so touchy with what they are fed.
What are your experiences and what ammo works best for you.
Regards
Damien Webb.
How hard is it to crack .100 thou.(one day).

Native Hunter,

A game man ventures into the world of shooting rimfires for accuracy.

If you find a type of ammo that your 54 likes it can be a good idea to buy as much of that batch of ammo as you can.

Many have found this or that ammo works real good only to discover that no other batch shoots that well.

cheers

woob,

I disagree .. ask Tony Z he's a glutton for punishment when it comes to rimfires and has been for years.

Rimfires are probably responsible for the amount of time he spends on the golf course

The rimfire was not responsible for me leaving Springsure early, work was, but the rimfire made it real easy to pack up.

Watching others shoot so well and seeing the number of people at the Hunter Nationals has me thinking about all the projects i intended on doing with rimfires in 98 when BR50 died. There were some very impressive guns there over the weekend, and my gear and approach to rimfires has sayed in the same time warp of 1998. Can't and don't want to change the rules, but i sure as shit can change my attitude. I recently built a barrel blocked front locker with drop port rimfire action for a mate way up North and he has lent it to a guy that is or has done well with it in BR30. It may be time to reinvent the wheel.
Rinso is right on the money when he says find a batch then buy up as much as you can while you can. If only we had known that Federal 900A and B were going to dry up without warning.

Tony Z,
If only we had known that Federal 900A and B were going to dry up without warning.
That the beauty of rimfire isn't mate ... you never know which manufacturer is going to produce the next good batch of ammo.

I have heard some good reports on Fiochi Match 22 lately .. Shane Clancy has had some good results with it so I will give it a run.

I get into the rimfire every now and then and after a run of good targets the unexplained fliers kick in and I remember why I got the shits with it last time.

Have you tried barrel indexing ?? if so whats your opinion ??

cheers
