223 or 222 Magnum
So,we don't take the sensible cost effective course on AV with caliber choice.
Now have my brand new Maddco varmint 1/14 barrel to put in my Sako 75 action.
Do I go with the 222magnum or Missed's favourite,the 223 Remington ?
My thinking was a bit more velocity ,don't know how much.
will mainly be using 55 grainers lead tips because I have over 3000 atm and there cheaper than most plastic fantastic tips.
Poly tips will get a run in the early load development stage just out of interest.
75 magazine's length being larger/longer than previously chambered L461 rifles models.
Should/would allow for the magnum cartridge to fit without having to seat the projectiles deep, encroaching in to the powder space. In yester year there weren't to many powders to choose from.Today ,we have more choices and cronographs to take the guess work out attained velocity.
Have a mate with. 222 mag reamer that lives around here .
Have access to 200 new Sako unprimed brass.
Is it really worth passing up the 223 to go with magnum.?
How much velocity will I gain over 223 ?.
Am I being optimistic hoping to get 200 fps more making it close to a 22ppc and 22/250.?

Re: 223 or 222 Magnum
you will get 100 to 150 more ....we did when a mate and i played with one years ago
could have gone more but with him and me not having a computer brass was nowhere
to be found , and with the longer neck you won't have worry about losing powder capacity
but if you are just going with lead tips the extra velocity will soon be
lost due to poor bc so you may as well go the 223.
edit .. disregard this it was a 5.6x50 just checked me book

Re: 223 or 222 Magnum
Dunno if there is much difference, its only two MM longer, and most of that would be in the neck. With bullets seated so they are at the base of the neck in the 223, you wont lose bugger all case capacity. But don't let me put you off doing something a little different. If you have an urge to do it, do it. You can always re-chamber later on if things don't work out.

Re: 223 or 222 Magnum
No dramas mate. PPC got a run on Monday last's search and destroy mission, the 55gners certainly hit with plenty of oompf, punches big holes in critters, exactly what I want it to do. Just got to find a decent billy, a good lump of a hog, and maybe a falla that isn't in the national park, to try it on.big G wrote:Thanks Mark.Camel wrote:Dunno if there is much difference, its only two MM longer, and most of that would be in the neck. Re: 223 or 222 Magnum
it is but the shoulder is forward less neck than a 222m and less body taper = more capacitybig G wrote:Not a 100% sure,I thought the 204 was a necked down 222mag shell.deye223 wrote:what about a 22-204 should get 3400 -3450 fps (55g pill) or more with the choice powder these days
