30/30 coming to Dub Vagus

Post by big G »

Just bought a Marlin 30/30.20" Barrel off AHN.

Need some help with brass, dies ,projectiles and load info.

Main job for the new shooting stick will be grunters and may be a Fallow during the rut.

Dies.
Do I go Hornady.? Cos I can get a FTX seating stem to solve the problem of foolking the the tips on the 160 jelly tips.Or will convention seaters work.?

Cases.
Rem,Winchester ,PPU,Highland or Hornady.

Projectiles .
Brands and sizes. 150,160FTX,170 HP,FN.? And why.?

Powder.
Adi, cos I have plenty .2206,2208 and Win 748.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers Big G

Sorry George, we cant help you here with that info mate. Its not a varmint cartridge, no matter what 220 says, you don't have a heavy barrel, and you will probably not put a mini Hobble telescopic sight on it.

MOP is not bad Knackers

220 was getting about 18 inches of drop at 300 m with his before the black powder episode

Congratulations George! We'll look forward to a photo when it arrives.

I'm not much help with the projies, as I shoot cast, but I'm using Win, PPU and Rem brass. I think the PPU is my favourite so far as it seems to clean up and size well and hasn't done too bad in the neck cracking department so far. But there isn't a lot between any of them.

I hope the new rifle is everything you want it to be!

Good job, we've got a 336A 30/30 siting in the safe 8)

Ammo wise ours was fed a steady stream of Rem Coreloct factory loads for a while but have recently started trying the woody 150g flatnose in front of 34g of 2208. I haven't had it over the chrono but it shoots quite nicely :D

Dies I just use the Lee dies, work well no issues.

The young fella has knocked over a couple of Fallow with it and I intend (once I get a handful of rounds loaded up for it) to test it out on a NSW Sambar (as those Vic ones are too tough for the little dirty thirty or at least all the Victorians think so)

Personal opinion shoot the flatnose pills, that what it was designed for if you wanna shoot pointy pills shoot one of the other 30 cals designed for it?

Cheers,

I would give the FTX a run and see how they shoot for you.
Ive had no trouble using a standard seating stem with them in 30/30, there is some data about recommending trimming case to a shorter OAL when using the FTX but I haven't had to. Seated to the cannelure in a standard length case the FTX feed fine through mine. Never worried about brass I group it by brand and that is all.
All the powders should work OK with 150-170gr pills, still not a lot of data about for the 160FTX, I used 170gr data as my starting point and didn't run into trouble.

Mine is still fitted with the 3-9 it had when we got it, I would be looking at something in the 2-7 3-9 range for a scope, low enough in the bottom end for quick close stuff and still plenty of magnification for 200 or more at the top end. The cheap weaver base allows the open sights to be used with the scope removed. Quick release rings might be worth considering if you want access to the iron sights.

Has any one tried the Hornady interlock 150 grain Round nose Or the 140 mono flex in the 30/30.?.
No 150/160/170 30/30 projectiles in the shop atm.
Will be buying a few boxes of Remington 150 factory to try first off.
Have a weaver style base as well as a Steel one piece links with steel rings.
New red dot or 2-7 x36!bushnell elite ,decisions, dicisions.
Thanks for your help Team 30/30. :D
Cheers George.

On Erica's Marlin 336 XLR:
Sightron 3-9x40
Piccy rail
Loopy PRW rigs

130gn Speer Hotcor
35gn 2208
COAL 64.55mm
Light crimp

How do they go over the chrony? ummm this dickhead threw out the bit of paper when cleaning the car

They shoot very well, but I will play with the crimping a bit, from a Factory Crimp Die and Roll die I have bought.
See if differing crimps and "tension" make a bit of a difference.

And not a plastic tip in sight. Are you sure they will work ? Didn't think anything without a plastic tip would be any good these days. :P

I'm a big fan of flat nose pills on deer, especially the 45 cal ones

I can't speak for the Woodies in the 30/30 (yet) but I know with the 45 cal flat nose the blood trail out of some entry wounds is substantial.

Yep, two things I'll never do is plastic tipped bullets out of a lever and slugs out of a shotty. I know you can do it but that doesn't make it right 8)

Cheers,

If I want to be traditional with my levers I stick with BP, lead and iron sights.
If I move away then I might as well use the best of what is available, so for me FTX, optical sights and god forbid smokeless powder.
No point only going half way.
