Mmmmmm loaded up a couple of the BT's this morning and the ring around the projectile from the seating die still remains (the Amax are a lot better but can still see the slightest of indents) ggrrrrrrr.

Just looking at a couple of options:
1) just checking out the Lee universal expanding die, may check the LGS and see if they have one (I have tried doing the same with a 6mm expander but that just didn't seem consistent enough and a couple I tried didn't feed very well, probably wouldn't be too bad if I was crimping it?)
2) Try seating with the seater from my .222Rem, kinda assume it would work? It is a Lee die so a different profile may solve the problem?
3) Whack one of the 45g ACP's into this sucker and crank her up and see if the mono pill is a bit sturdier in the seater?

Mmmm, wish there was cricket on TV so I had some good thinking time.

Just been googling and see Hornady do make a "custom seating stem" in .224 specifically for the Amax, off to the LGS tomorrow!

OK, this just got serious!

I started fart arseing around with the 45g ACP this arvo, figured if these long slender pills are creating issues I might try throwing a shorter stouter lighter one really fast.

I made up a dummy round this is the 45g ACP 5.6 on the left .222 rem on the right.



This thing should really fly flat and hit hard (as long as it stabilizes in the 1:8 twist).

Bloody hell back at work next week, I'm gonna miss the spare time to stuff around with this stuff.

Looks good Ross, shouldn't have any worry about stability, that usually only comes into consideration when using long projectiles, not shorter ones.

Yeh, it should be kinda fun. I was looking at some Barnes data for the 45g TSX thru the 220 Swift and they had a max. charge of RL15 of 40.5g doing 4105fps. Going on what I measured late this arvo the 5.6 has approx. 2.8grains more case capacity (water) so I should be able to get some serious velocity out of this this little pill.

I'll still keep working on the Amax and the BT and see where I end up, a bit of fun stuffing around and whatever I'm inclined to shoot with this will fall over with either pill

Well, it looks like I found the limit of RL15 and the 45g ACP. Speed over the chrono was surprising at was a bit more first up than I expected, speed was as follows:
38.5g = 4047
39.0g = 4079
39.5g = 4161
40.0g = 4191

It was then that I bailed out and called it quits, bolt lift was sticky on the last couple (not real bad but just a little sticky just the same) and there was some sooting around the case necks that surprised me a bit and in poor light I didn't immediately notice.


Looks like I'm backing down a bit and seeing what happens next. The LGS is chasing up the custom seater stem for the dies for me, hopefully they are in stock at the distributors.

Good speed mate, so if you dropped down to 38gn neat you would prolly end up at 4000, that's hooting along nicely.

I don't know how they held up as I was only testing velocity so wasn't aiming at a target at the same time. I did have a decent tree as a backdrop and it was leaving a bit of a scar on it

I did the chrono thing during a short break while out chasing some bunnies, it was damn hot yesterday. Anyway here's a gratuitous bunny and shotgun photo (apologies for no dog in the pic, thought it was bit hot for her and I treat the dogs better than myself sometimes so she had a rest).

Waldo, re the discolouration of your case necks, do you clean your lube off the neck before shooting them ? Reason I asked is, I have found with my 20/222 and 17/222 if I didn't clean the lube off I got discoloured necks, when I do, the necks stay pretty clean. I have changed nothing else but wiping the lube off the necks with a cloth before loading.

I give them a run in the ultrasonic cleaner after sizing, trimming and all that stuff so they are nice and clean when I load em

To be honest I only loaded a few of the 45g ACP's for giggles just to see what I could get out them and close to 4200fps seems to be about it. The 5.6 was meant for big pills so big pills it is

Waldo I am not famillar with your cartridge but if it is slightly larger than a 220 swift and therefore slightly larger than my 22-250 Ackley I would think that RL17 would be a good choice to try with those 75's. I am getting 3750 with 40.5 grs.

3750 is pretty well hooking along for a 75g pill

I do have some RL17 in the cupboard, I'll see how I go with the 70g B&T's and 2209 combo. It's getting towards Autumn and time to shoot furry stuff so if I stumble on a load that works I'll stop stuffing around for a while
