what scope?

Post by lowndsie »

I'm tired of cheap scopes. Need something for my tikka to replace the Weaver 2-10 classic. Any recommendations? It will get used in the timber so a 2x plus varible is needed. Cheers.

Yeah, would be a goodun, especially with a larger objective, say the 50 mm, if I remember the Weaver classic had a 38mm. Not a bad little scope, I had one for a few years but considered it more fitting for a rimfire, mine was on a HMR

Cheers guys. I had a weaver years ago and thought pretty highly of it which is why I brought this one. But the image at 100 is not as crisp as I hoped and the field of view is woeful. I guess the 10 power is nice for testing loads but probably not needed for my style of hunting.

For a hunting scope on goats, pigs, etc. take a hard look at the Kahles KX 2-7x36 and the Swarovski Z3 3-9x36.

Compact, lightweight and very good image with better twilight performance than you would think.

I second Adams suggestion of the Swarovski z3 but I would go the 3-10 x42. I don't reckon you would notice the difference much between a 2x & a 3x bottom.

The field of view is noticeably wider at the low end on the 3-9 than the 3-10 z3. Either are great scopes, as are the Kahles 2-7 that Adam mentioned.

The difference at the bottom magnification is quite noticeable.

Field of View @ 100m....

Kahles 2-7x36 15.9 to 5.6m
Kahles 3-9x42 12.1 to 4.3m
Kahles 3.5-10x50 11.2 to 4m

Swaro Z3 3-9x36 13 to 4.5m
Swaro Z3 3.3-10x42 11 to 3.9m

They are all good hunting scopes, pretty much in the top tier for their magnification. All retail here in Australia for around $1100 (give or take a couple of hundred).

Looking for the same type of scope for my Tikka T3 lite 270.i'm after a illuminated reticle for really pore light when you can make out you target but can't see the reticle.Running a Zeiss 3.5-10x50 Conquest atm.
Leupold V6 2-12 had a very coarse cross hair.
Swarovski 2-12 ,fantastic.Just can't justify 3K.
Zeiss Dura Lite 2-8, just about perfect .
Good luck.

Not that this will help, but I did see a Weaver with a wide objective for sale the other day. Didn't know they made oval lenses...

I have had a few Kahles...

Helia C 2.5-10x50
Helia CT 3-9x42
American Hunter 3-10x50

The one thing they all have in common is quite a large ocular lens, I would suggest the Swarovski purely on the reason that they are a little trimmer. I found I had a lot of trouble with the ocular clearing my bolt handles. Don't get me wrong, the glass was all top notch, I still have most of them to be honest, because they work well. If I could find a Helia C 8x50 I would sell another one, but I can't seem to find one! I think with whatever you buy at those sort of dollars, they will all be appreciably better than what your currently using. I think the z3 3-10x42 would be a nice all round choice for you if you can spring for the dollars.

Another one worth looking at would be as Ackley Improved said, the VX-6, Illuminated reticle, if thats your thing, glass pretty comparable to the z3's and I know that its better glass than the HD5's, after looking side by side through them. The only real downside with the VX-6 would be the 30mm tube if that is an issue for you, plus not as light as the swaro's..

Cheers,
Jackson.

Some nice scopes mentioned there. Does anyone know the differences between the Zeiss Duralyt and the HD5? Beside the obvious difference with magnification, I'm looking at the Duralyt 2-8x42 and the HD5 2-10x42? The Zeiss website is confusing at best :)

The duralyt has 1/3 MOA clicks rather than 1/4 MOA, A mate has also said he was really disappointed with the Duralyt glass in comparison with his other Ziess', just some food for thought, I was turned off them from that information.
