Talk to me about actions
Ok, sooo the Bride has given the go ahead for a .308 Norma Mag build (caveat being as long as he rolls Royce gets built to a commodore price as such).
So a .375 Zastava I can pull the barrel, and replace with a lilja (that part is set in stone).
What other actions would you consider for a semi custom build?
Yes I would love to be able to afford a Neiska or Bat etc etc but reality is a bitch.
Your thoughts and comments . . . . . . Go on.

Re: Talk to me about actions
Mate, I don't think there is another action that you could find that offers the benefits that the Zastava action does, especially at the price you can get them. One question, do you really need to go to 375HH, I would have thought a 300WM would be the right length action for your build, the 300 NM is a little shorter, no ?

Re: Talk to me about actions
Just to clarify. 300 Norma Mag? Not 308 Norma Mag?
If you are going the 300 I can understand the long action cutout, and unless you can pickup one of those Rem700s built for the 338 Lap it will be an exercise in paying to get it up to standard.
Oddly, I have a P14 action here that will also do the job. Wouldn't be my first choice for a 300 Norma though.
A Savage long action could be made to work without much investment. Swap the bolt head over, order a pre-fit barrel from the US, fit it up to a nice stock. Quite easy really.
The only other action I would suggest is an old Winchester Model 70 push feed. They are longer and wider than the Rem700, yet are easy enough to find (and dirt cheap).
If you are going with the 308 Norma then Camel is right, a 300 Win would be a better donor.

Re: Talk to me about actions
is this a "just cause I can" build rather than "I really need". Will it be a knock about hunting rifle?
I had no need for a 257 wby mag but wanted one. a Zastava was the perfect choice, maddco barrel boyds stock vx 3 scope under $2 grand finished, It works. And I dont feel guilty!!!
Is it going to be your pride and joy? Have you fondled a BAT?
And then again, I have a fully trued Rem and I think it is absolutely fantastic. You can play with it at the weekend
BUT to get a fully trued Rem you have to spend a bit and then you may as well buy one of the lower priced custom actions like a Pierce for I think around $1100
Just a few musings

A quick squiz on Usedguns and I reckon this would be a better donor than a Zastava.

wash your mouse out with soap Adam, how could you, that's even worse than a Remington.
I better back track a bit Mick7.62, I didn't realise you were talking about the 300Norma, I assumed you were talking 308NM, which I reckon would be the bees knees

Re: Talk to me about actions
Sorry yes it will be a .308 Norma Mag build.
I was thinking of a .375 H&H action as the donor due to the extra mag length for projectile seating.
trevort, yep a "because I can" build, not going to be a princess build, a working rifle that will be used.
No I haven't "fondled" a BAT, and a fully "pimped out" Remmie action would most likely cost more than a surgeon, for the same footprint.
Adam,
as per above WRT caliber, the P14 and the M98 will fit the Norma Mag, but I would prefer cock on open and not have to stuff around trying to get the 'smith to change the P14 (there is one on used guns already). Savage actions are to me pretty ugly, (Yes Glenn I own one ). No doubts to their accuracy, just not the nicest.
There is a few 7mm Rem Mag / 300 Win Mag / .338 Win Mag rifles on used guns at the moment, from Browning, Ruger, Winchester, Howa and Weatherby Vanguard (S1).
Or I can buy the Zastava in .375 H&H new for about the same coin.
Decisions decisions.

Re: Talk to me about actions
My Zastava 300wm magazine max length is 3.4 inches, if that helps at all.

Camel, from a previous thread.
Mick,
There are 2 magnum actions, one for the 375H&H with a magazine box of 3.6", the other is for the 7mmRemMag, 300WinMag and 458WM with magbox length of about 3.4", both are the same action but the 375H&H one is opened.
Cheers...
Con
I am thinking the 3.6" will allow long seated projectiles. Yes I can also get the 'smith to throat the chamber to a specified length too . . . . . as mentioned previously decisions decisions

Re: Talk to me about actions
How hard to adapt a barrel threaded for a remington 600/700 to a Zastava? Would I loose much in length?

Re: Talk to me about actions
monsoon35 on here has an Interarms Mauser action and a custom stock that would be perfect for the job you're looking at. Stock has cross bolts, beautiful timber and the action is ready to go apart from having the bolt face opened up. I would say looking at the rifle someone was about to do a 375HH or similar but stopped at the bolt mod and bailed out of the project, leaving it sit in the safe for some years. Nice bluing on the action, has mounts, all i can see it needs is a barrel and the bolt machined out to 0.532. Slickest mauser i've played with for some time. Give him a PM. I'm sure he would sell it for a reasonable price.

Re: Talk to me about actions
The only way to do it would be to cut the existing thread off and start again. Large Ring Mauser is a 1.1in 12TPI thread with a 55deg thread.stinkitup wrote:How hard to adapt a barrel threaded for a remington 600/700 to a Zastava? Would I loose much in length?
