Got clearance to leave the conference early on friday as last flight is at 5.10pm. Have booked my return home on Sunday and now just on hold to reschedule the flight to Canberra.
AI, nice to catch up. Definetely need to talk more about an AId swede. Everyone tells me the 6.5 284 should be the gun I start with but I think I share your problem, needing to work out for myself and liking something different.
Once I clean up in short range benchrest I bet everyone will want a 20 ppc

You'll need to email Jim McKinley with your details. email address is on the SSAA ACT site. He will need your name, what you are shooting (LG, HG or both), and if you are sharing flags/need to be on the same bench as somebody else.trevort wrote:stupid question time, do i just rock up sat morning and expect to shoot or do I need to confirm with some one (like the organisers!) first

Are there going to be "Range flags" for people to use??steven wrote:Boys,
Don't worry about flags, 90% or more of shooters don't own them. You need very long poles at most ranges to have them on the bullet path when you shoot 500m.
Steve
Not personally but a series of flags out on the range for general use??
Rinso- Would a 6-18 AO scope be usable?? As all my other scopes are fixed and the highest is a 12X.
I dont know whether I can make it at this time but I'm going to try.
What is the minimum rounds I need to preload to comp in the match's? given that I will be sighting in at 500 at little river before hand.
What other bits need to be considered to bring along??
Is there a sporter class- Ie a hunting rifle class.

ogre6br,
Yes there are range flags and there will be plenty of other flags out there too .. you more likely to have a problem deciding which flags to watch rather than having none to watch.
Yes an 18 x will get you out of trouble, you only need to see to aim I can lend you an old spotting scope if you need it.
Match consists of 5 targets 8 rounds per target (5 scoring, 3 sighters) so 40 rounds for the match. An optional warmer target (which you would be foolish not to shoot) on which an unlimited number of rounds can be used in a 10 minute time limit.
So if you have 50 rounds that gives you 10 for the warmer target and 40 for the match.
Firday the range is open for practice, if you get in early having a few shots to confirm zero is a confidence builder.
There are 2 classes Light gun ..anything up to 17 lbs and Heavy gun .. everything else.
No hunter class but aJR was having a comp here for best score with a hunting rifle at a Fly shoot, as I recall he offered a meplat trimmer as a prize (they are very nice as well) so that would mean you could enter that.
Other bits what calibre are you looking at shooting ? ... is the load tested and acceptable to you ?
If the answer is yes then all you need is a bi pod or pedestal rest, rear bag, cleaning gear and spotting scope if you have one.
Bring warm clothes Canberra is well known for cold weather.
cheers

It's a sporter 6MM BR that SC built me 1:10 twist.
I dont know what projectile to try ATM so I'm haviong a look arround at whats avail and going from there- I'll be using the best BC proj that the 1:10 will stabalise.
I have to find a set of 25mm rings also as the scope thats on it it a 10X 30mm body scope.
Anyone feel like lending me a set of Sako 25mm optilocks??

A.I. or anybody else? What weight projectile are people using out of their 22.250's (if anybody does) at the 500 mtr fly.
I went to the 200 mtr rimfire fly at Leeton and thought about working on the Rem for the 300mtr. Shane informs me that the 300 mtr fly at Leeton is an exception to the rule and that 500 mtrs is the state wide fly distance.
FMD do you know that 500 is 200 longer than 300 and since my rem has a 1;14 twist I was wondering if it is really worth trying to work on a load or not?
Dont get me wrong, I like competition but its a long way to any 500 fly comps for me and since I have the second child due in Jan, funds will dry up more.
Does the twist rate in my VSF prohibit me from even getting in the ball park?

You are really stuck with the 50-55 grain projectiles, which are not the best choices for LR benchrest with their light weight and low BC.
For a 22cal, you need to be into the 75-90grain mark, and from what I have heard, the 80 Sierra MK's are fairly good.
If I were you, I'd go for the Sierra 52MK's, load them up fast, and come along and enjoy yourself!
Cheers
