$750 scope ?
$750 scope ?
I know this has been asked a million times before, but as I haven't had the cash at the time I didn't pay too much attention.
I am looking for a scope for my 223
It's main use is spotlighting and I can't really go too far over the $750 mark.
I was thinking of a vortex viper 4-16 x 50 but would like to know of any other suggestions.
Cheers

a 4-16 x 50 power scope sits at 12 on my favourite spotlighting rifle.
I think you have the magnification right, let someone more choosey tell you what brand!

Re: $750 scope ?
Milo, have a Sightron Sii Big Sky 3.5x10 on my 223. Very good value from US. Reticule tracks accurately and holds zero. The 16 mag would be handy for some longer range targets and gongs during the day.

Re: $750 scope ?
I just did a couple of nights with an old fixed 8x40 AO Leupold on a Browning Low 1885 Low Wall in 223R and a standard halogen single 175mm Lightforce. No dramas targeting from 10m to 120m. I would have been comfortable out to 300m for targets in the open. I'm not sure if you get an extra bit of FOV with a fixed power over variable in the same magnification all else being equal as a rule?
For small aiming marks out to 300m I prefer a 6-24 in a variable. x12 magnification should be enough, but a to cover me off a couple of properties stacked with black Angus calves. x24 makes identification very simple especially when you're only getting those same green cat's eyes through a log or to side of thick cover. Fortunately most of the 1-2yo calves had been cleared off on the weekend, waiting for mums to drop in a couple of months, otherwise every other cat out there is same jet black.
I certainly wouldn't be choosing a variable with a magnification higher than what you need for your type of shooting. Just another opportunity to forget adjusting the magnification or the adjustable objective back to short-range.

Re: $750 scope ?
now i will tell you i have never owned one but knowing what i do now i wouldn't buy another loopy
i would buy the s111 sightron series but the reason i rec this is they don't make one in the power
range you want in the 111 and for the money this is hard to beat .
things i like about the sightron
there tracking is very good i have been doing a lot of research since i noticed glenn and others using
them on some big cal long range rifles .
there glass is very good for the money.
i can't believe there not more popular . they will be here in my 3 gun safe's in future .
cheers D

Re: $750 scope ?
Milo,
Dunno if you have got a scope yet, but check out www.cameralandny.com if you haven't.
They have a deal on a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 at the moment for $599 US. It cost me $760 landed to my doorstep when I couldn't resist the price.
Very good scope for the money.
If you already have a scope, disregard this post
Regards,
CZ550

Re: $750 scope ?
Thanks for the help, I ordered the sightron s11 4.5-14x50 and hope to have it in the next few days.
The zeiss would have been a nice scope but I had already ordered the other.
I have had a no name scope on my tikka for a year so cant wait for something decent.
Cheers
