Hamilton rifle club 300 and 400 yard feral shoot

Post by Branxhunter »

Dad, my brother and I ventured out to the Hamilton Rifle Range again on Saturday afternoon and took part in the short range shoot that they run every last Saturday of the month. This weekend it was feral cat targets at 300yards and feral pigs at 400 yards.

Dad and I shared the Omark while my brother was shooting his Tikka T3 HB in .30-06.

I took the SLR camera this time to get some better photos with the telephoto lens. Enjoy.

That looks like a real fun shoot you all had. Back in the 90s i ran something similar where we had the Lever gun targets set out with the crow at 200, rabbit at 300, fox at 385 and oinker at 500 meters. As you can guess they were marked off the silhouette ranges but after some people started to post possible scores i walked the targets out randomly to take the set ranges out of the equation. It was a great shoot, no sighters and three shots on each target for a score total. It died off after some silly club rule changes (it was getting too big and some schmucks didn't like it) but i reckon with all the great varmint/tactical rifles out there it could be a goer again. The only rule we had was you shot it as you would in the field. Harris bipod and a rolled up jacket or similar under the butt was pretty standard. No pedestal type rests etc, that way the bloke off the street could come in and shoot without feeling handicapped.

Great to see someone has the foresight to run this shoot. Great pics too. Well done guys.

Scrolled through the pics a couple of times and the only shiny red one has the bolt on
the right side is an Omark I think.

Looks like a great time was had by all good on the rifle club for running such a shoot.
I think that may have been a confession Kickin. :D Not the first time it has happened
I bet.

It is an Omark chambered in .223, and is a club gun they picked up a year or two ago. The stock is by a well known target stock maker whose name escapes me at the moment. The bolt looks like it is on the wrong side but it is a RH bolt.

Yeah it is good fun Trev, particularly that last Saturday of the month. Being the short range stuff (300-400 yards) it is quite casual, and there is usually a few hunting and varminting rifles mixed in amongst the target rifles. The rests can range from an ammo box wrapped up in a jumper to Harris bipods to flash joystick control front rests, but there is no "us and them" attitude. The ol' boys bring out some nice old target rifles from the 60's and 70's as well.
