I like the mag system on my Sakos, I can pop the mag out and load it, I can pop the mag out and remove all the rounds, it sits flush with the bottom of the stock but has a good capacity as its double stacked. Most of all I like the way I can topload the mag through the action.
Are there any systems that can replicate this and work with a Rem700 clone custom action?
So far the only candiate I've found are the double stacked AI AW mags which I could use with a Stiller TAC30 AW. The downside of these is the Mag sticks out a bit far and the Mag/DBM is a bit Tacticool looking for my liking.
This is for a 6.5x47 or similar I am mulling over building, am I missing any other potential magazine systems out there?

Re: Top Loadable, Detachable Mag
I believe the new Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle 'polymer' magazines can be top loaded. The metal version isn't flexible enough.
You might also best look for actions that are open enough for top loading with a maybe a polymer magazine option, or at least polymer feed lips.
Seems it might also be possible with the new Savages with the double stack, single feed? http://www.cabelas.com/product/Savage-r ... 370479.uts
Not sure if you can get away with FNH detachable magazine? http://www.midwayusa.com/product/932445 ... -magazines
Browning A-bolt with the magazine retained onto the hinged floorplate. Magazine can be loaded on the floorplate or replaced with another magazine.
Lee Enfield SMLE- top loadable, but not really made to have the original magazine swapped out, instead used stripper clips.

The two mag systems that might interest you are the
Original Remington DBM system which provided a flush 4/5rd magazine for 308 sized cases.
A Wyatt magazine DBM, which I don't particularly like as parts are difficult to get here in Oz. Also not sure if they still do the flush fitting one though.

You got me thinking now tripledeuce. For my next build the mag options you mentioned would be nice. Might have to go a sako action.

Re: Top Loadable, Detachable Mag
I'm a massive sako fan but more and more I'm getting frustrated by the lack of bits for them, mainly stock options and better triggers. The rifles are obviously pretty good in standard form but if you want something a bit special the options are limited and/or expensive.
Thanks for the other suggestions everyone, the standard Remington DBM sounds like
it might be a possibility if I can confirm its toploadable.

Re: Top Loadable, Detachable Mag
The Rem DBMs are notorious for feeding issues and need the feed rails milled off the action to work. They also have a nasty notch out of the side of the stock for the release.
What about cutting and TIGing an AW?

Re: Top Loadable, Detachable Mag
You could easily shorten an AW mag and zap the bottom plate back on. They feed beautifully and top load without a problem in the Tac 30 AW action. Take a look at the DBM setup Adamjp had Atlasworxs make, they have the mag release following the profile of the trigger guard.

Good advice there Greg. For an even less tactical looking DBM check out the APA one here: http://store.prophetriver.com/american- ... ggerguard/

Re: Top Loadable, Detachable Mag
Surely Remington would have tried to work out how to make a side feeding disposable stripper clip system for a centrefire rifle with minimalist sized action port like on their new Model 783.
I say bring back the stripper clip to suit scoped rifles with either system (fixed floorplate or detachable magazine) a bit like the M1941 Johnson rifle with the rotary magazine. 5-shot would be enough were not try to compete against the Garand or Pederson rifles.

Re: Top Loadable, Detachable Mag
Perfect, thanks everyone,
I think a Tac30 AW with AW mags will maybe be the best way to go. I had thought the choice of DBMs for the AW mags was limited, I didn't realise anything for an AICS also fits the AW.
I'm liking the idea of a cut down AW mag for general use and then still having the 10 round option if needs be.
