Ahh, progress, was wondering today if you had done any more to this.
For the technically challenged like me, if you are taking a bit off the rear of the locking lugs, and a little off the opposite face inside the action, wont that lead to a little extra headspace issue ? One of those questions I have always been meaning to ask.
Edit for question 2.
Say someone had a Mauser 98 and an old extra bolt body, could they make an action wrench out of it by adding an extra length to the rear of the body, taking off the third locking lug or course, but maybe not ? Homer moment there.

Mate. I think you have bigger issues than locking lugs. If I'm not mistaken you appear to be an eels supporter!?
In all seriousness I'm with camel in this aswell. If your taking material away won't you end up with clearance issues somewhere. In my head I'm thinking you also take a few thou off the barrel to bring everything back to spec? Then I'm thinking indexing issues. Now I'm remembering why I'm not a machinist

I won't touch the barrel. I will machine the front of the action the full amount of what is taken from the bolt and lugs plus another 0.015mm to reduce total headspace to 0.025mm (or 1 thou for the dimensionally retarded)

Only if you are a machinist, a perfectionist would say 0.9843 thou, or take off 0.0254mm to achieve 1 thou as 1mm is 39.37 thou not the commonly regarded 40kickinback wrote:0.025mm (or 1 thou for the dimensionally retarded)

Shrinking headspace. And no, the mating face wasn't true to the bolt hole.
25 minutes to set up in the spider, 30 seconds to machine.

Glen, good to see you are getting it sorted and will be better than new.
Also wondering what you use as a lube on the bolt lugs when shooting, does stainless need something different? I have just been using some gun oil and haven't given it much thought. Is grease better?

It was 0.02mm out of square and I machined 0.05mm after it cleaned up. This has given me 0.04mm (0.0017"approx) headspace on a fired case.

I use any good quality moly based grease I only put it on the rear of the lugs on
the bolt.
I would be open to further advice but never had a problem.
