220,
Don't worry mate, as long as you do "your bit" the 45/70 in BP will do fine.
If you cast your own, consider a higher antimony construction to gain some penetration.

Yes i know you want a "bang flop" or at most a "bang, stagger, flop" but the allocated guides will be carrying a rifle of a suitable caliber to ensure the buff falls over, without added stress/pain/ "pucker factor".

Thanks for volunteering to guide me Mick, I know all the other guides and have seen them shoot
Seriously though I would be happy for a bang, bang, bang, stagger, bang, bang, bang, flop. Would still have one left in the mag at that. If things go to plan should have TYB along so have a 375 for backup as well as what ever the guides are carrying.

.375 will definetly do the job for back up, I will be taking my 9.3x62.
Not sure how we are going to do the breakdown of Guide to hunter as yet, I will be more than happy to take you in my "allocation" though. (As yes the others are pretty shoddy   )

A bit of an update for you blokes.

I have been taking a few blokes out of late and the results have been average to say the least.

That being said, I am going to have to put a minimum calibre restriction on buff.

So if you want to take a buff next year, the minimum calibre will be 308win with a bonded or monolithic projectile weighing 150gr's or more.

Guys, I recommend you start doing some offhand shooting practice now. There is no time to set up your f-class benches up here ;)

You don't need to shoot anymore than 100m offhand, but from what I have experienced lately, offhand at 30m is a real struggle for some.

Cheers

I will also have to tender my "resignation" as a guide at this stage, due to us having to move down to Wodonga I am unsure if I will be able to get back up here to assist.

Can I also add that if people are buying big bores for the trip, get out and practise with them, practise working the bolt with the rifle still shouldered, and practise rapid fire and getting back on target after the recoil! Being a member of the Big Game Rifle Club has improved my field (and not just offhand) shooting heaps as it has forced me to practise and do all the stuff I avoided previously!!

Sadly, I can't help but agree. Field shooting is different to range shooting.

We do a few range days in Canberra with the ADA and one of the scenarios I have set up in an attempt to get our blokes out of the rabbit shooting mentality (shoot, have a look) is to have 2 balloons set up on a tomatoes stake.

The idea is to shoot one offhand and then as quickly as you can work the bolt (or lever) and pop the second one.

Nothing like practice to improve your results.

BB what would you determine as acceptable accuracy at 100?

A dinner plate at 100m would be acceptable for buff mate. The main thing you need to remember though, is you need to be able to hit that plate on an animal that is walking, stationary, running to or away from you. There is a good chance that after the first shot you may have to run up to 200m for the follow up shot. Sounds easy in theory, but have a go at it after walking 2-5km in soft sand in 35*c + temps. I think nothing fucks your shooting more than fatigue.

A bit of snap shooting practice will also be very handy. As already mentioned though, make sure you practice that with the rifle you will be using on the day.

Cheers
