z5 or hd5

Post by crackers17 »

So what do we think z5 or hd5 5 /25 -50
Is the z5 that much for the money. .
Or is there a better scope for the money or less.

Will any of above scopes be going to yass inn just over a week. .

Looks through them both befpre you decide. The HD5 has a very curved field of view, but is otherwise very good with excellent lockable turrets. The Z5 has a very fine reticle and less useful turret system. Neither is perfect nor are they fundamentally flawed.

I can bring my Z5 3.5-18 and Jason may be able to bring his HD5 3-15 for a similar comparison?

Not the one you are seeking though.

I've got both in 5-25 flavour, both with the duplex reticule. Ballistic turrets on the Z5.

I think the Z5 is a touch lighter but I've not measured it. The only low light shooting I do is with a spotlight, I think the Z5 would be better in low natural light conditions but under a spotlight I can't see the difference.

A quick google for current retail prices shows the Z5 is around $700 more than the Zeiss. At those prices I would buy the Zeiss, the Z5 is better, but not that much better for me.

I got my Z5 from QGE on one of their 20% off weekends, if you could get a deal like that I would lean towards the Swaro. I've heard that Swarovski are much better at aftersales service than Zeiss are, which may also be worth bearing in mind.

The duplex on both is too heavy for my liking but I'm not a fan of the other reticule options, I would prefer something closer to Leupolds fine duplex.

I have a hd5 5-25x50 on my howa 204 with the varmint reticle and its a beast! 25x magnification is a lot though when your in the field, but is awesome for target work or when you have a stable field setup.

Shear fun How is it at night under a light on the lower power around 8-10 say and maybe up to 14 a bit much at night but it works for me. I still want one even though I've blown my savings on another rifle  ........... Again!

15x is great with a light especially if your with some eles who is covering the short stuff. Great scope with the zero stop turrets, the rapid z varmint reticle looks a bit cluttered on paper but it works well. Zeiss have a balistics calculator online where you imput your load details and it gives you the magnification the hash marks match up to.
