Camel wrote:Jacko, my only beef with the magazines on the CZ rifles are that they hang way down, I like my magazines to be flat on the bottom so they sit nicely on the window rest. As the original post asked about using it as a spotlight rifle, I gave my opinion based on that. My advice on building a Vartarg on a CZ action would be to get one for a 221, or a 222.
As far as controlled round feed, I personally think that it doesn't even come into the argument with regards a dedicated spotlight/varmint rifle. On a hunting or dangerous game rifle, yeah, maybe, but it wouldn't sway me one way or the other. My hunting rifles are all Mausers of one sort or another, I just like them, not specifically for the CRF ability. I personally think it is a bit over rated as a feature on a normal hunting rifle for the average punter, more likely gun writers looking for something extra to add into their reviews because there are only so many normal functions of a rifle that can be said over and over again.

Don't get me wrong, the CZ is a great little action but I'd only rate it third on my choice for building a vartarg on.

I agree mate, as far as the mags go, that is why I have machined the little lips off the bottom metal and have flush fitting three round mags which kind of alleviate that issue.

I know the CRF gets overplayed a hell of a lot too mate, but I'd of thought it would be of some help, when using quite a small little case, and a longer magazine, and getting it to feed correctly. I actually prefer CRF on my spotlighter, It doesn't throw brass all over the place like the push feeds I have had, have, and occasionally I don't work an action hard enough, and end up short stroking it, impossible with the cz.

Currently, the cz is the first choice action for me, only because I am a left hander, and I prefer it to the M85 zastava action, which would be the only two options for me, until MRC finally release their micro action, which is about perfect really!

Great questions. The same thoughts have been going through my head lately, Your requirements are similar to mine. I can see a 20 VT in my future. I'm new to custom work.

The questions I have are for a budget build is the following feasable.
Buy a new Howa in 204, some info in Howa thread, have the chamber shortend and reamed to VT or 20/222. Uses a medium length action but price would be favourable.

Do the same with a CZ, magazine has some issues depending on whose opinion you take. :D A bit dearer option but uses a micro action.

A Sako would be nice but $$$

So guys what are your thoughts.

Regards
Bruce

If you want to do a cut and shut on a a CZ factory barrel into 20 VT then you obviously have to start with a 204 ruger which has the longer magazine. It may work perfectly for you or you may get some feeding issues if the Guns and Game article was accurate

G'day all,
and.............damn you ALL!
I've helped a mate with load development for his Sako 20VT and it shoots 3 into a 5cent piece at 100yds
He even offered to sell it to me, I told him not to sell his ONLY custom build.......sigh!
Now I've got an itch for a quiet sub 224 cal 150-200yd rifle
Bastards!
Thinking of a CZ527 204 chopped to 20VT or a 222/223 chopped to 221FB, unless I've got the coin and a Sako 20VT or 17FB turns up in LH!
Guess I'll be waiting a looooong time!
Very interesting topic though :D
Cheers Ned

Ned, for the range you have indicated, you could become possibly the first person in Australia to own a 20 Hornady Hornet. Just think about it mate, oh and don't let fear hold you back. We could offer you plenty of advice.

Trevort - Which edition of Guns and Game was the write up in you are refering to? Will try and find a copy.

Jacko9 - Could you put up some pics of your modified mag and trigger guard. Agree that it would look better, there is a US company that modifies them but they don't export.

Three in the mag is generally enough so I might look at modifying my 223.

Found some info on rechambering CZ527 on Saubier.com

This one shows a pic of CZ 204 mag modified for 20vt

I suppose anything is possible but its deciding if it is worth the trouble. I think I need to see a VT and a 20/222 in the flesh. I can see a good reason to get to the Missedathon

Camel,
It has been my experience that inevitably she who must be obeyed does and will find out.
Soooooooo, I would be clearing the air now before it turns up on the doorstep, so to speak, and then the s#@t really will hit the fan if she ( minister for war & peace) does finds out and you hadn't told her.
Of course you could always claim ignorance and say it wasn't yours.
Good luck with that.

SWMBO, occasionally when I decide she must, doesn't really know what or how many rifles I have, beside that I just tell her that I have sold one and now have to replace it, she can see the sense in that. Beside she is away for the next two weeks, hopefully it turns up before she gets back.
